Ep. 589: 'We're Not Going Down Like That' After The First Two Hitters Reached, Sonny Didn't Give 'Em A Chance
Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals 4-2 win over the Pirates on Wednesday, June 12. 2024 at Busch Stadium.
Sonny Gray was looking to rebound from a rough outing last Thursday in which walks came back to haunt him. That meant a gameplan Wednesday of attacking hitters in the middle of the strike zone and trusting his stuff to do the rest.
Well, after Gray had allowed a walk and a double to begin the game, he had to mentally lock back in and tell himself to put up or shut up. He wasn't adhering to the plan he had discussed with his catcher and coaches leading into the game, and didn't want to be the type to talk about something without doing it.
Needless to say, Gray did it the rest of the way, striking out the side in the first on his next 10 pitches to escape the jam and set the tone for his night.
Although the final RISP numbers for the Cardinals look more favorable than it was (we'll explain), the offense did enough to back Gray in his eighth win of the year.

Ep. 588: Mikolas matches Skenes but Cardinals lose as their feeble bench is becoming a real problem
Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 2-1 loss to the Pirates from Tuesday, June 11, 2024.
In Ep. 588 of B-Schaeff Daily we discuss the duel between Miles Mikolas and Paul Skenes as the rookie phenom lived up to the billing for the Pirates--but Mikolas matched him stride for stride.
It was the Cardinals offense that disappointed in this one, unable to get to Skenes or the Pittsburgh bullpen in a meaningful way.
Ryan Helsley had a hiccup, but the loss really shined a light on the bench that John Mozeliak has built here in 2024. It left Oli Marmol with precious few real options to deploy resources effectively late in the game.
Oh, and Brenden got shot by an airsoft gun downtown while walking back to his car late at night. True story.

Ep. 586: The Cardinals Finally Handled The Rockies! ...And All It Got Them Was This Lousy Series Split.
Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 5-1 win over the Rockies on Sunday, June 9, 2024.
The Cardinals finally had an easy peasy win over the Rockies in this series, but all it got them was a series split. That's not what was needed when the series began, but by Sunday, of course, it was the most they were eligible to do.
How do you feel about the split and the state of the team as they continue to tread water in the standings during a portion of the schedule that should have been a building block toward contender status?

Ep. 585: Point blank, Saturday was a bad look for Oli Marmol and the Cardinals
In Ep. 585 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 6-5 loss to the Rockies on Saturday, June 8, 2024.
The Rockies did everything in their power to hand the game to the Cardinals on a platter and the Cardinals politely declined to win it.
A three-run throwing error helped give STL the lead, but the Cardinals had a rare mishap by Andrew Kittredge that contributed to the loss. But it would not be fair to blame it solely on the usually steady reliever.
The Cardinals let an opposing starting pitcher dominate them who had no business doing it. The offense was anemic. And the fundamentals in several areas of the game, particularly on defense, have evaporated.
All of it led to a very testy postgame presser with Oli Marmol, which we will discuss here in this episode. Strap in, it's a long one.
But the takeaway: This day was a bad, bad look for the Cardinals.
