Episode 242 – Lockdown Special WIth Sean Kelly

Episode 242 – Lockdown Special WIth Sean Kelly

This week on the podcast we’re joined by the first member of the Automobile Club de Monaco to apply for a job at Walmart (his word not ours!) Sean Kelly joins us over Skype from San Diego to talk about what he’s going through during the global pandemic and with F1 being off the agenda for the foreseeable future just how him and many others related to this and other sports are coping with life in general.

It’s not as bleak as it sounds though as we’ve still got time to talk about various F1 related things, even if we don’t know when we’re going to see a car on track this year, with Azerbaijan postponing their race and Canada rumoured to be doing the same at the time of recording. But we stay hopeful and look back on a few classic races with Sean and test his knowledge on a tricky Who’s A Total Shunt for good measure.

Thanks to everyone for your comments after last week’s show and as long as you want to listen to us waffle, we’ll keep recording them while we’re all in lockdown.

    Stay safe

Episode 241 – We’re Still Here (If A Little Different)

Episode 241 – We’re Still Here (If A Little Different)

We all know by now that Formula 1, F2 & F3 along with just about all sports events have been put on hold due to the current Global Coronavirus pandemic. As an F1 podcast this leaves us with a few difficult decisions to make and we’ve decided that we are going to do everything to keep going as best we can.

From this week we will be doing podcasts with a difference. As the current health advice is to minimize social contact where possible, we’re recording from 3 different locations over Skype. So for the time being we’ve got a new kind of show where we still talk F1 as well as letting ourselves go off on the usual tangents that make up the vast majority of the extra shows that we do for our Patreon subscribers. So this week we look at the last-minute cancellation of the Australian Grand Prix and the effect that Covid-19 has had on not just F1 but all world motorsport and our general thoughts on the current situation the entire planet finds itself in.

The next bit is where you the listener comes in, we want to know if there’s anything (mainly F1 related) you want to hear us talk about, for example, a classic race review, our thoughts on historic teams and drivers and anything else that springs to mind, so let us know on the socials if you’ve got ant ideas

We’ve still got the usual bad jokes, speculation, Formula Lee (featuring a huge apology from Paul) and Who’s a Total Shunt with a few extra non-F1 bits as well and hopefully we won’t have to do these for long and the world gets back to normal as soon as possible and we can go racing again.

    Until then, stay safe

Episode 240 – 2020 Pre Season Special With Craig Scarborough

Episode 240 – 2020 Pre Season Special With Craig Scarborough

At this stage of the year we usually have an idea about what’s going to happen on-track, certainly for the first few races of the season after pre-season testing is done. But things are different this year as we don’t know how many races we are actually going to get to see. With China being postponed (no replacement date as yet at time of recording) and Bahrain running behind closed doors, we may lose more races to Coronavirus before much longer. But at 3Legs Towers we like to put a positive spin on things and as always we’ve got our testing wrap-up and season preview with our resident technical expert Craig Scarborough.

This week on the podcast we talk to Craig about what we’ve learnt during testing from Mercedes new DAS system to the improvements that Williams have made on their 2019 car to get them closer to the rest of the pack and we look forward to the first race of the season in Melbourne this weekend.

We’ve got some predictions for the races and you can join in with your Australian Grand Prix predictions here and see how accurate any of us can be at the great season opening lottery! There’s also a reminder of the latest Formula Lee challenge too (Melbourne in a Racing Point in the dry) and the usual load of bad jokes and tangents too.

And don’t forget that the extra Patreon podcasts are available on our page over there and that the show now goes out live on YouTube every Monday around 9PM UK time

    Enjoy

    Episode 239 – Testing’s Done, Now What?

    Episode 239 – Testing’s Done, Now What?

Pre-season testing is done for 2020, but what now. With the current Covid-19 situation, we don’t actually know if we’ll have an F1 season to talk about for the first part of the year. Things are due to kick off in Australia in less than 2 weeks time, but with Various events worldwide being cancelled, including the opening 2 rounds of the MotoGP season, thigs are lookign more than a little uncertain for F1 right now.

This week on the podcast we take a look back at what happened in the 2nd testing session when the cars we saw on track were closer to what we should see at the opening races of the season and how they all seem to shape up against each other and could we see a change in the pecking order that’s been largely static over the last few years? We take a brief, spoiler free, look at season 2 of Netflix’s Drive To Survive that dropped last Friday and judging by Twitter, got binge watched by about 50% of anyone who listens to this show by Friday night!

There’s also the launch of the new Prediction League for 2020 with a couple of changes, you can add your Australian Grand Prix predictions here and we’ll be running this one all season. That’s not the only new thing this week as we launch the 2020 Formula Lee Season and the final leaderboard from the mini winter series. It’s not all new though, there’s still plenty of bad attempts at jokes and of course, a Who’s A Total Shunt.

And don’t forget that the extra Patreon podcasts are available on our page over there and that the show now goes out live on YouTube every Monday around 9PM UK time

Episode 238 – Was Is DAS?

Episode 238 – Was Is DAS?

Testing week 1 is done and what an innovation the Silver Arrows have dropped on us this year? Up to last Wednesday, steering wheels just rotated left and right and that was all they did, but now that to more innovation from Mercedes we now have ones that go in and out as well.

This week on the podcast we take a look at the first week of pre-season testing which features the new Dual Axis Steering (DAS) system from the reigning World Champions, which allows the driver to make slight adjustments to the toe angle of the front wheels on the car, giving it a better response into corners and slightly reducing the drag on the straights. We’re not going to get too technical on this (We’ll save that for the next time Scarbs is on). But needless to say we’re all pretty impressed by it.#

It’s not just about Mercedes though as we take a look at how all the teams stacked up with their new cars, although since we recorded this on Monday night, it looks as though Renault may have been running their 2019 car with a few tweaks, and what the test has shown us about  where they will perform in the upcoming season.

And of course there’s all the speculation and wild guessing you’d expect from us along with the usual Who’s A Total Shunt and a reminder about the latest challenge in the Formula Lee Winter Series (a 2010 RedBull in the dry at the Silverstone short circuit.) Don’t forget that the extra Patreon podcasts are available on our page over there and that the show now goes out live on YouTube every Monday at around 9PM UK time (4PM EST) (When we can get the bloody feed to work)

Episode 237 – Radio Check, Are we Ready To Go?

Episode 237 – Radio Check, Are we Ready To Go?

That was one long winter break, but I think we got through it intact and we’re ready for F1 to get going again, and here it is!

This week on the podcast we get to talk about what we think the new cars look like from the early glimpses we’ve had of them at the team launches before the first 3 day test of the season at Barcelona this week, where we’ll get to see all 10 teams on track, unlike this time last year, along with a look a a few news stories that have surfaced in the 2 weeks since our last show.

As the season is getting going, we’re happy to say that we’ll be back to weekly podcasts now and all being well, we’ll get back to releasing them on Tuesdays, or is this Paul’s mouth writing cheques his work schedule can’t cash?

There’s a bit of pre-season speculation as well (you wouldn’t expect anything else from us would you) as we head into what could be in interesting year, which the seasons before big rules shakeups usually are along with the results from the 2nd race of the Formula Lee Winter Series and the 3rd and final challenge too (a 2010 RedBull in the dry at the Silverstone short circuit.) There’s also a new and tricky Who’s a total shunt, and don’t forget that the extra Patreon podcasts are available on our page over there and that the show now goes out live on YouTube every Monday at around 9PM UK time (4PM EST)
