Ep. 36 Catholicism and Homosexuality Part 1: Marriage, Sex, and Politics

Ep. 36 Catholicism and Homosexuality Part 1: Marriage, Sex, and Politics

Welcome to Have a Blessed Gay, your weekly spiritual-comedy podcast! Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this week’s episode, Tyler is taking a deep dive into the history of the Catholic Church and it’s relationship with homosexuality. Because the history is so intricate, this shall be a two part episode. In this first part, Tyler examines Pope Francis’ personal theology surrounding homosexuality and marriage equality, and the recent decree regarding civil unions issued by the Vatican. Then, to help us have a better understanding of their reasoning, Tyler takes us back in history to the beginning of the church, looking at the Catholic Church’s history with society, government, marriage, economics, and sexual morality. The Catholic Church is the world's oldest and largest continuously functioning international institution, an institution that has majorly shaped our modern society. In order to combat the things that are unjust, we have to learn the history and how we might be indirectly or directly supporting an abusive system. Let’s deconstruct and learn together!

Join holy host, Tyler Martin, as he critically discusses social norms, current events, mental health, religion, and spirituality from an outcast's perspective. In this week’s episode, Tyler chats with Crystal Cheatham all about deconstruction, reconstruction, and listening to our inner intuition!

Crystal is an LGBTQ+ rights activist with a focus on religious liberty. Since 2011 Crystal has worked simultaneously as a ghostwriter and queer rights activist with groups such as Soulforce and the Attic Youth Center. As an outspoken activist she has written for The Huffington Post on the intersections of faith and sexual identity, a faith and spirituality column for the Philadelphia Gay Newspaper, and sat on the steering committee of the Human Rights Campaign as the Faith & Spirituality chair. As an entrepreneur Crystal is the founder of two projects: Our Bible App and The IDentity Kit, both of which have provided resources for marginalized communities of faith. Her newest project stems from Our Bible App -- the app is branching into the realm of trade publishing with a new imprint, and their first book will be an anthology of 60+ devotions all centered around deconstruction called, The Deconstructionists Playbook. They have a Kickstarter happening right now through the end of the month, please go support them and help kick off this amazing imprint...and if that’s not a good enough reason to, your boy, me, is a contributing author. I will have a devotional in the book, and I cannot wait for you to read it.
