10/23: Pres Trump and Biden face off in final debate. The U.S. recored more than 71,000 new COVID-19 cases yesterday.
President Trump and Joe Biden clash in a contentious but mostly civil debate. The final presidential showdown revealed how far apart the candidates are on key issues like the pandemic and personal ethics -- just 11 days before Election Day. New coronavirus cases hit their fourth highest daily number since the COVID crisis began. In Colorado, at least five people are unaccounted for in the worst wildfires in state history.
10/22: Pres Trump and Joe Biden prepare for the final presidential debate. New warnings about foreign election meddling.
President Trump and Joe Biden will share the stage in Nashville, with the president trailing in most polls. There will also be new rules this time, after the president interrupted Biden at least 73 times during the first debate in Cleveland. Former President Obama hits the trail to help Biden deliver his closing arguments to the American people. There's controversy this morning over a new claim of election interference involving Iran and Russia. In a rare, hastily-called news conference last night, U.S. officials described emails threatening people, unless they voted for President Trump. Hundreds of fire crews are battling a blaze in Northern Colorado that grew dramatically yesterday, producing heavy smoke and flames.
10/21: President Trump makes a frenzied push for votes. Former President Obama prepares to campaign for Joe Biden.
Tony Dokoupil is in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, where both candidates are making a major push. Yesterday, it was President Trump making his pitch to voters in Erie County, a potentially decisive battleground for the 2020 election. Tonight, former President Obama will hit the campaign trail in person for the first time. A new CDC report gives fresh insight into the human toll of the pandemic, saying about 300,000 Americans who should be alive died between late January and early October. We have a new information on the Trump administration's impact on families trying to cross the U.S. southern border. Lawyers say they cannot find the parents of 545 children after they were separated at the border.
10/20: President Trump takes his feud with Dr. Fauci to a new level. Wisconsin grappling with a coronavirus surge.
Tony Dokoupil is continuing his swing state tour in Ohio this morning for our series "At America's Crossroads." In Arizona yesterday, President Trump said people are "Pandemic'd out," and he's also called Dr. Anthony Fauci a disaster. The nation's top infectious disease expert continues to sound the alarm about the pandemic. More than 58,000 new cases were reported yesterday, and hospitalizations are on the rise in 38 states, including Wisconsin. A big change has been announced to the final presidential debate on Thursday, as part of an effort to keep it more civil than it was last time. There are still questions this morning about a Los Angeles woman's 12-day ordeal, stranded in Utah's Zion National Park.
10/19: Pres Trump and Joe Biden barnstorm battleground states. Record-breaking early turnout may be changing the race.
Tony Dokoupil is on the road in three key battleground states, beginning in Michigan. This morning, he's in suburban Detroit, in one of the counties that President Trump flipped from blue to red in 2016, and is being hotly contested again. Meanwhile, the president is focused on some other critical states in the West, holding rallies in Arizona today after visiting Nevada yesterday. More than 28 million Americans reportedly have already cast their ballots in this election. Over the past week, we've seen massive early voting lines in multiple states, part of what's expected to be a record turnout. Economic stimulus negotiations are expected to resume today on Capitol Hill, after months without an agreement. The U.S. has been reporting the highest number of new coronavirus cases since the summer, as hospitalizations are up in at least 30 states. The case against five of the men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is heading to a grand jury.
10/16: Pres Trump and Joe Biden square off -- in rival town halls. Alarming new coronavirus surge.
President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden held simultaneous prime time town halls, where they faced voters' questions on a number of issues. The events replaced the second presidential debate, after President Trump declined to participate virtually. America sees its worst day for the number of new cases since mid august. Colorado is now facing its worst fire in state history. The Cameron Peak fire has burned more than 160,000 acres since it started in August.
