Africa's Talking Podcast Episode 3 | Dr. Leyla Hussein Gikandi
Leyla Hussein is a consultant, psychotherapist, and international lecturer on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and gender rights. She currently works as the Global Advocacy Director and Deputy Team Leader of the Africa-led Movement to End FGM, fighting to eliminate violence against women and girls. In October 2020, Leyla was elected to become the first Black female Rector of the University of St Andrews and now works closely with a team of student activists to fight for more access, action, and accountability in higher education.
She is the founder of the Dahlia Project, a specialist psychotherapeutic and counseling service for survivors of FGM, and Magool, an organization promoting the rights and well-being of women and girls. Leyla is very experienced in providing safeguarding training to activists, well-being professionals, and others who confront the physical, psychological, and social implications of violence in their work. In 2020, Leyla co-founded Safe Spaces for Black Women alongside Fatima Hagi to create an emotional support and well-being community for Black women worldwide.
Leyla's work has been presented at Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Leeds, Exeter, and many Ivy League universities across the US. She is also a published writer, holding her own pages with the Huffington Post, Global Citizen, Cosmopolitan Magazine, and The Guardian. She frequently lobbies at a political level, advises policymakers, and triggers much-needed national and international debate.

Africa's Talking Podcast Episode 1 | Samuel Gikandi Africa's Talking Group CEO
Samuel Gikandi co-founded Africa's Talking in 2010, with Eston Kimani, both graduates of MIT. Together, they built a company that has consistently worked on reducing the high barriers of entry for developers and companies in gaining access to telecommunication infrastructure through easy-to-use and robust customer engagement APIs.
Prior to founding Africa's Talking, Sam, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology alumni. worked for 6-years as a Software Developer and Trading Strategist in Morgan Stanley’s New York and Hong Kong offices. He was involved in building the trading infrastructure across Morgan Stanley’s global equities business. Sam also helped establish and grow the High-Frequency Trading Desk for the Systematic Trading Group in Asia.
