be strong and very courageous - be careful to do all that is written in

    2. Joshua 1: 11 prepare
    3. Joshua 3:3 when you see the ark of the covenant move – follow it
    4. Joshua 3:5 Sanctify yourselves – I will begin to magnify you
    5. Joshua 5:2-3 & v 9-10 – make sharp knives – cutting off the flesh
    6. Joshua 6:17 & 21 the city was devoted to destruction
    7. Joshua 11:11 – utterly destroyed them not sparing anyone that breathed
    8. Joshua 24: 15 - Choose who you will serve
4 Principals for a Successful Life
    1. Mediate on the Word of God
    • Read it / Hear it / Obey it - pray over it and let it take root in your heart
    • No substitute for God’s word - it brings: conviction, conversion, conformity, cleaning
    • Why meditate on the scripture ? it produces growth, wisdom, fellowship, fruit bearing
    • Make your decisions based on biblical principles/ store the WORD in your heart
    2. Mortify Sin - cut it out / do not let sin reign in your mortal body
    • It’s in your nature (the FLESH) / it’s at the core of your being / The heart is deceitful
    • Sin separates us from God / breaks communion / destroys spiritual desires
    • Sin is the greatest life long battle you will have - it’s taken many good men down (David)
    • Promise / Preparation / Prayer / Pain / Process
    3. Move in Step with God
    • Abide in Him / hears his words / walk in fellowship with Jesus Christ
    • Walk in truth / Walk in the Spirit
    • Do not grieve the Spirit - by failing to act on His prompting / or by acting on evil desires
    • Walk by faith not by sight / not paralyzed by fear / stepping out on the promises of God
    4. Serve God and Him only
    • Make life altering decisions
    • No Idols in your life
Mortify Sin – Joshua 3:10 ”I will drive out the enemy”
    • Why ? Either you will destroy sin or it will destroy you
    • Promise – confidence in God “I will be with you, I will drive out the enemy”
    • Amalek – Joshua learned a lesson in Exodus 17:16 “ The Lord will war with Amalek”
    • Prepare - Joshua 1:11 “prepare for the task” – 3:5 Sanctify yourself
    • Pain - the sharp knives at Gilgal / the cutting off – separation
    • Process - are there set backs ? Joshua ch 7 – reminds us about Ai
    • Power – where does the power come from ? The Holy Spirit & the Word
    • I will be with you. You will meditate on the Word . I will destroy your enemy
    • You must be a willing participant to overcome - Be strong and disciplined
    * Elevate conviction over Emotion
NT scriptures that teach us to mortify sin
    • Matt 5:27-30 & James 1:14 - Lust give birth sin & destroys you
    • Romans 8: 13 - Mortify the deeds of the body – and you will live
    • This is an ongoing battle / remember the Good Samaritan / Gal 6:1
    • I Corinthians 10:13 With many of them God was not pleased
    • Temptation is common to man / God is faithful / provides escape
    • Colossians 3: 5 Mortify (put to death) what is fleshly in you
    • Set your affections / seek above living
    • Hebrews 13:5 Keep your life free from covetousness (love of things)
    • “ I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU OR FORSAKE YOU “

    Unyime Akpan - June 16th 2024 - Lessons from two fathers final - June 16th, 2024
    Three Essential Roles of Fathers
    1. Provider:
Working at jobs that are not necessarily ideal
    2. Maintainer:
Striving to maintain the landmark of the Bible against the lies from the world
    3. Instructor
Instructing the children about Jesus Christ, the savior of the world
    Luke 1:
    Question:
Name fathers in the Bible whose children died, but were raised back to life?
The husband of the wealthy woman in Shunem
    OT: 2 Kings 4
Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue
    NT: Luke 8
    Lessons from the two fathers
    Bow at Jesus’ feet
Pray to Jesus for your children (family)
    Love your wife
    Listen carefully to your wife
Give attention and time to your children
    Recognize procrastination as an enemy
    1 King 4;Luke 1; Luke 8;Luke 1:17;2 Kings 4:9-10;Colossians 3:19
    Lessons from the two fathers:
    1. Love Your Wife
    2. Operate as a team
The unnamed old testament husband/father seem to have a good handle on this
And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way. Let us make a small room on the roof with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there.”
    2 Kings 4:9-10
No indication that Jairus did not
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them Colossians 3:19
The best thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother
    Listen Carefully to Your Wife
Sometimes her words and what she is saying are not the same
The old testament husband did not listen carefully
Give Attention and Time to Your Children
Children will not remember the “ expensive & fancy toys”
Children will remember the time spent with dad
Give attention to the children’s spiritual growth
Don’t leave it only to your wife
Give attention to the children spiritual growth
Hard to implement if you are always absent
Recognize Procrastination as an Enemy and Avoid it
Every other thing usually seems more urgent and important, especially work
Their importance will fade with time
Don’t give only leftover to the wife and children
Children grow up very quicky and leave home before we realize it
    Children (people) will last forever
Children also learn from our example
Pray to Jesus for your child (family).

Nick Hansen - June 9th, 2024 - The Only Begotten God

    Main Scripture
Joh 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Joh 1:15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, `He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.'"
Joh 1:16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
Joh 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
Joh 1:18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

    Father
    Provides for
    Gives wisdom
    Gives direction
    cherishes
    Builds up
    Disciplines
    protects
    Son
    Relies on
    Learns from
    Obedient to
    Admires / respects
    Echoes / imitates
    Grows independent
    trusts

    Observations
The word “Father” occurs twice in this chapter, v14 and v18. The word “Son” occurs for the first time in verse 18.
The word translated “only begotten” occurs 9 times in the entire Bible, and four of those in the gospel of John, two are in these verses.
The phrase “grace and truth” occurs twice in these verses and nowhere else in the Bible.
The Apostle John is carefully weaving the introduction of John the Baptist into this prologue. In v6-8, and then this verse.
John 1:15 is echoed once more in verse 30.
The name of Jesus is mentioned for the first time (this gospel) in v17.

    Perfect Relationship
The Father and Son are equal in glory. Grace, goodness, holiness, and truth.
The Father and Son are in perfect relationship.
The Father and Son are united in their will.

    Related Scripture
Col 1:19  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell,
Col 1:20  and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

    1 Timothy 6:16:
"Who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen."

    Related Scripture
    Rom 3:19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God;
Rom 3:20 because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Rom 3:21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
    Rom 3:22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
    Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;
    Rom 3:25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
Rom 3:26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

    Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;
Heb 11:18 it was he to whom it was said, "IN ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE CALLED."
Heb 11:19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.

    Gen 22:1 -10

    What was it, blessed God
    What was it, blessed God,
Led Thee to give Thy Son,
    To yield Thy well-beloved
    For us by sin undone?
’Twas love unbounded led Thee thus
To give Thy well-beloved for us. To give Thy well-beloved for us.

What led Thy Son, O God,
To leave Thy throne on high,
    To shed His precious blood,
    To suffer and to die?
’Twas love, unbounded love to us,
Led Him to die and suffer thus. Led Him to die and suffer thu

Believers as “temporary residents” – what does this mean?
This mean we are not home yet. i.e., this world is not our home. This mean we are in this world for a moment .i.e. we are time bound
This mean we must prioritize our time here on earth
This mean we cannot conform to the pattern of this world

    WISDOM
    1 Corinthians 1 v 24-25
    Moment of reflection
As a “Believers”, maybe it’s time to look inwardly.
How do YOU view yourself? Do YOU truly view yourself as a “temporary resident” on earth, looking ahead to eternal moment with God? Or are YOU busy “setting up camp” here in this world by pursuing things that won’t last?
As “Believers” it is time we sit down and shine light on various aspects of our lives – Home, Work/Career, Relationships, Habits etc. and PRAY to God to reveal to us where we are running after the world instead of him.
