One more about songwriting! Defiance is essentially about standing up for what you believe in, and seeing the world beyond binaries - real life is a bit more complex than that! I'm sharing how this song was inspired by my girlfriend's trip to Cuba & a great 2-part movie from Steven Soderbergh starring Benicio Del Toro. Let's start from scratch! This song is about many things: dysfunctional leadership, political madness, conspiracy theorists taking over...but mostly, it was a way to vent off my personal frustration of everything that was going on back in 2019-2020 and feeling anxious about the future.
Here I'm also going through some bands that influenced our songwriting process, as well as a little book by a certain individual named Aldous Huxley, with a somewhat similar title (!), that was a big inspiration to write this song.
