elivating voices: Sharing lived-experiences with Joseph Ogaba

This week on The Eclectic, Joseph Ogaba joins us to share his lived-experiences as a person with disability. “It is our choices that show what we truly are far more than our ability.” This quote by J. K. Rowling is one of my favourite of all time. Clearly, life isn’t fair and it is only our choices that sets us apart. Please note that you should always talk directly to a person with disability and not the people accompanying them. Click the link and listen. How can we as a people achieve equity in our society? Is that even possible? Join the conversation and let’s hear your thoughts. Don’t forget to comment, like, and share!

Myths about Albinism with Khadijah Ibrahim

Myths about Albinism with Khadijah Ibrahim

Ever wondered about persons with albinism? Yes, those folks we often refer wrongly to as “Albinos”. And by the way, for those who don’t know, albinism is a disability. Yes, it is a genetic condition caused by mutations of certain genes that affect the amount of melanin that one’s body produces. I’ve heard lots of myths about albinism. The most bizarre of them is that persons with albinism don’t die, as though they are some kind of immortal humanoid beings who are on a different level from the rest of us. Another silly myth is that having sex with a person with albinism will cure HIV! How crazy! Click the link. as the very perfumery Khadijah Ibrahim, a remarkable lady with albinism talks about among other things, some of the myths surrounding albinism. Join the conversation and share your thoughts. What other myth about albinism have you heard? Don’t forget to comment, like, and share!

    Story Telling with Ademola Adeleke

    Story Telling with Ademola Adeleke

Imagine having to live with a disability and still face the extra burden of proving yourself even when it is not necessary to do so. Achieving academic success for a blind student studying in Nigeria is no mean feat. It takes sheer determination and some very high level of personal motivation to come out victorious. What with both physical and attitudinal barriers all seemingly conspiring to discourage you. Acquiring education should not be made to be this difficult. Clearly, we live in a society that is not built for persons with disabilities. However, with the right kind of approach and attitude, live can be made so much easier. Remember, we are all just an incident away from a disability. Do not say “God forbid, it is not my portion!” If it hasn’t reached you, it hasn’t passed you by. Click the link. as Ademola Adeleke shares with us among other things, his experience while studying at UNN and triumphing despite the odds.
