Who Were the Magi? - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.5

Who Were the Magi? - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.5

Merry Christmas from the Family Room Conversations!

We’re so excited for Christmas here at First Baptist Rincon, and we hope this is a lovely and peaceful time for you and your family. In keeping with the holiday spirit, we’re tackling a Christmas topic this week. Have you ever wondered about the Magi?

We hear this story every year about the “three wise men” who visited Jesus shortly after He was born. But if you read through the gospels, the real story is much more vague on the details of that interaction than you might think. This week Gary and I are trying to get to the important bits of this story and why we include it in our Christmas celebrations at all.

But even if you don’t have a question you want us to discuss, we love your feedback!

Pride, Boasting, and Humility - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.4

Pride, Boasting, and Humility - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.4

Welcome back to the Family Room Conversations!

This week we’re on the road! I’m traveling for the holidays and I’m bringing you with me. Michael Mynatt is the Lead Pastor at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Enterprise Alabama, and I grew up learning from him. I was so excited to include him in our Family Room Conversation this week.

The topic of the week is pride. Paul and many other writers talk about pride and boasting as a sin and something that pulls us from God. That makes plenty of sense. But one of the first things he writes in the letters to the churches he’s pleased with is that he boasts in them. How do we reconcile that? And how can we determine the line between healthy pride and harmful pride?

Translations of the Bible - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.3

Translations of the Bible - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.3

Welcome back to the Family Room Conversations!

This week Gary and I go into the different translations of the Bible and some thoughts about how to pick one that’ll be good for you. There are tons of these so we decided to narrow them down to just the translations you could pick up at Barnes and Noble here in Savannah. I hope you find this helpful!

    Prayer Part 2 - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.2

    Prayer Part 2 - Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.2

Welcome back to the Family Room Conversations!

This week we’re going back to a topic we looked at a couple of weeks ago. Toward this end of last season we talked about prayer and its purpose. We landed on the purpose of prayer being to align our will with God’s will. A few weeks after that someone asked a really great question about that assumption.

They asked if the purpose of prayer is to line up our hopes and desires with the Father’s hopes and desires, what is the purpose of group prayer? We often pray for groups and join in with groups in another person’s prayer. But why do we do that? And how does that fit in with the purpose of prayer we arrived at earlier?

Should the Church be More Progressive?- Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.1

Should the Church be More Progressive?- Family Room Conversations - Season 3 Ep.1

Welcome back to the Family Room Conversations!

We’re so excited to be back discussing your questions in our third season of this series! We’re kicking off with a super important question: What does good social progressivism look like in the church?

We’ve all had conversations, many of us several times, about social issues with people who take a totally different stance on important topics in the church. This week, Gary encourages us to be mindful of ours and each others’ starting points, the presuppositions and hopes that we have before conversations like that can even start.

The Jesus Questions Part 1- Family Room Conversations - Season 2 Ep.13

Welcome back to the Family Room Conversations!

This week is a special one, as we’re tackling several questions together! Gary and I have gotten several questions about Jesus over the past few weeks. While some of these might’ve been able to warrant their own episode, it seemed that the best way to handle them was all together.

We’ve got five big questions about Jesus this week, so it’s possible you might not hear yours. If you’ve been wondering about something to do with Jesus, or anything else the church is involved with, I hope you can take away from this episode that no question is too small!
