  • Yes, it’s safe to fly. So why have there been so many crashes?

On today’s show: Aviation-safety reporter Darryl Campbell from The Verge explains why air travel remains safe, despite a recent string of crashes and near misses. NBC News’s Lawrence Hurley talks about how a “reverse discrimination” case made its way to the Supreme Court and why the justices might rule unanimously on it. Three men who were recently detained by the Trump administration at a high-security military prison in Guantánamo Bay told Washington Post reporter Silvia Foster-Frau that they were denied calls to loved ones, subjected to humiliating searches, and left in isolation for prolonged periods. Foster-Frau gives us the details. Plus, the Supreme Court halts a midnight deadline for the Trump administration to release certain foreign-aid funds, a child in Texas is the first confirmed death amid the state’s measles outbreak, and the U.S. wants to import more eggs to fight high prices and bird flu. • Is there a deal to end Russia's war with Ukraine?

On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet President Donald Trump at the White House. On the agenda — a deal for Ukraine to share its rich natural resources. The Trump administration wants hundreds of billions of dollars of rare earth metals and other critical minerals. Details are thin on what exactly Ukraine would get in exchange. The meeting comes as the world marks three years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and as Trump promises to bring an end to the war. But bringing an end to the war may not be so simple argues Alexander Vindman. The Ukrainian-born Vindman was the White House staffer and active duty Army officer, who testified against Trump during his first impeachment trial in 2019. Trump fired Vindman not long after. • Billionaire Tax Club

Tax season is upon us, with millions of Americans preparing to file lots of complicated paperwork with the Internal Revenue Service to figure out how much they owe the federal government. Potentially complicating things this year, though, is the Trump administration's decision to fire thousands of IRS workers, just as all that complicated paperwork starts rolling in. Economist Lindsay Owens, executive director of the economic policy think tank Groundwork Collaborative, explains what tax cuts we can expect from Republicans' forthcoming legislation. And in headlines: A pair of federal agencies directed government departments to prepare for mass layoffs, the U.S. records its first death from measles in a decade, and Jeff Bezos says The Washington Post's op-ed page will focus on 'personal liberties and free markets.'

  • The gutting of the federal workforce

  • Every family has an origin story – for author Jo Piazza (Under the Influence, Wilder) her family's is a murder mystery.  For as long as she can remember the Piazzas have told the story of their Sicilian roots going back over a hundred years ago: one by one the sons and then their father sailed off to America to carve out a better life. Their mother, Lorenza Marsala was supposed to join them – but she never made it. She was murdered by the Sicilian mafia, they said.  The truth of what happened has morphed like a game of telephone through the generations. Various versions of the story claim she was killed by the Black Hand, others insisted she was a witch, killed over a bad spell. Now, Jo is determined to untangle the twisted narrative which just might bridge the gap from cinematic mob fantasies to an unexpected reality.  Join her in Sicily on a family vacation/fact finding mission in which she goes to the scene of the crime, confronts mafia experts, consults mediums, and tracks down Italian officials, determined to set the record straight on her great, great grandmother’s mysterious disappearance.
