Bonus: Hey History! LIVE at Adelaide Writers Festival

In this special live recording of Hey History! host Axel Clark asks historians Clare Wright, Anna Clark and Kiera Lindsey what historical objects can tell us about the past? What can a piece of ochre tell us about Australia’s Deep Time History? Can an old gold pan help us to hear the past? And what about a pair of South Australian pink shorts? We ask kids what objects are special to them, and play guessing games with objects - including one that's in the Guinness Book of World Records! Convict kids

Why did kids get transported from Britain to Australia? What were their crimes? Did they miss their families? What was life like as a convict in Van Dieman’s Land, an open air prison on Palawa land? Students from Princes Street Primary School in Hobart tell us what they know about convict kids. Hamish Maxwell-Stewart and Marcelle Mangan tell the story of transportation, convict tattoos and tokens, and convict life at the Cascades Female Factory in Hobart. They answer kids’ questions and reflect on what the evidence can and can’t tell us about the convicts. Elaine: Caring for two kids and running a support work business

Elaine is a carer for two of her three children. As a Malaysian Australian, Elaine experienced more nuanced difficulties as a carer, inspiring her to create her own support work business with her husband. I pretty much burned out a long time ago and that's okay. I don't think it's resilience. It's just do it. Geetha Bhat

Geetha has lived in Toongabbie since the early ‘80s, after migrating with her young family from Karnataka, South India. She has been involved in community service and charitable organisations in her local area for over 35 years, balancing this work alongside her 36-year career at the ATO, Metcash and Mission Australia. Geetha is a respected elder in her Havyaka community. She gave full-time retirement a try but has recently taken up a part-time role with NSW Healthshare to stay active and be involved with her local hospitals. She is actively involved with Healthy Living Toongabbie Inc a group of health-conscious business and community leaders in Toongabbie urging local residents to join in the fight against type 2 diabetes. When at home, Geetha likes to spend time in her garden, cook delicious meals for family and friends and catch up on the latest business and investing news. Maths education in Australian schools

Dr Jill Brown is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education at Deakin University. She is a former maths teachers and current maths educator and education researcher. Jill is internationally recognised for her research where her interests include researching the teaching, learning, and assessing of real-world applications and mathematical modelling, mathematical thinking and reasoning, functions in technology-rich environments, affordances, zone theory, and anything that furthers our understanding of teaching and learning mathematics. 5. Breaking out of your research silo

In this episode of Research Impact: UTS Case Studies, we are breaking you out of your research silo to look at ways of collaborating across disciplines, as well with external partners. What would happen if we as researchers were brave enough to leave the ‘safety net’ of our own disciplines? In this episode you’ll hear from host Associate Professor Martin Bliemel the Associate Dean of Research for the Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation who is eager to demonstrate that transdisciplinarity is more than a buzzword but a way of thinking and doing research. He is joined by Professor Cameron Tonkinwise, Head of the Design Innovation Research Centre at UTS where they employ “frame creation”, an innovation-centred approach that applies “design thinking” to problem solving. Along with Professor Stuart White, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Futures who has spent 20 years working with academics across disciplines to become an expert in wrangling different minds and perspectives to create groundbreaking and impactful research. These three UTS scholars examine the pleasures and pitfalls of co-designing research, debunk myths about transdisciplinary collaborations, and provide advice on creating a space for complex collaboration. The Oldest Classroom

The media taking note to improve practice

Erin Morley is the editor of Education Review and Campus Review both of which report on current issues in school-based education and higher education respectively. Healthy Homes

Living in a cold house can be bad for your health and bad for your quality of life. In this breakthrough study, researchers from UTS teamed up with Sustainability Victoria to look at the benefits of making houses warmer for vulnerable people. What they found was that spending relatively small amounts of money to improve thermal comfort had powerful – and sometimes surprising – results for health, well-being and energy savings. New teacher perspective

Gabrielle Zolezzi is a classroom teacher with experience working in both the public and private sectors of education. In her first six years of teaching, she has moved between full-time classroom teacher roles to positions on her school executive, shaping her holistic view and understanding of our education systems.
