فردریش انگلس در سال ۱۸۴۵ و در کتاب «وضعیت طبقه کارگر در انگلستان» از مفهومی نوشت به نام «قتل اجتماعی». طبق نظر او وقتی طبقه حاکم و بورژوا میداند که عواقب شرایط و وضعیتی که برای کارگران ایجاد کرده سلامت آنها را به خطر می‌اندازد و موجب مرگ زودرس آنها میشود اما کاری برای بهبود این شرایط نمیکند این عمل قتل اجتماعی است و آنها باید پاسخگو باشند. حدود ۱۷۰ سال بعد این اصطلاح در دوران همه‌گیری کرونا اغلب از طرف جامعه پزشکی احضار شد.
