Host James Patrick Regan speaks with slack key guitarist Keola Beamer, the two of them cover Keola’s Slack Key (and Hawaiian culture) immersion camp “Aloha Music Camp”. They talk about how Keola brought Tablature to slack key (and possibly guitar in general) bringing it over from lute transcriptions for his first slack key book in 1971. They discuss why slack key was kept a family secret in the missionary era of Hawaii and they talk about the first recorded songs of Slack Key, Gabby Pahinui’s “Hi'ilawe” and Chet Atkin’s rendition of Leonard Kwan’s “Opihi Moemoe”. They discuss Keola’s first exposure to Slack Key and how the exposure changed the direction of his life. They discuss growing up in Minnesota moving to Milwaukee and his musical education brought by his dad’s record collection and a very bad BMX bike accident that led to a serious spinal surgery and a purchase of a Martin guitar. They discuss a chance meeting while vintage clothes shopping that led to a find of a pristine 1930’s era Rickenbaker lap steel. And now for something completely different..
There’s something special and different about this podcast. I’ve only listened to the Bottle Rock series so far. Jimmy is a genuine, relatable host and interviewer. That he shares a lot of the touring and musical hard knocks experiences with the artists he’s interviewing brings a great perspective. That he talks guitars and amps is great, but the touring road stories are fascinating. “Are you making any money?” “Traveling by car, van or bus?” “What do you do on your off days?” I just like it. I always make a point of listening to each of the artists he’s interviewed - mostly because he so positive and enthusiastic about each act! And it should be noted I’ve bought some of the music because of what I heard.
It’s a hard world out there people. The road is tough, tough, tough. Thanks for sharing the spotlight with some fine guitar players who aren’t rolling in dough and flying from gig-to-gig. They’ve earned our respect and the least a lot of us could do is give this podcast a listen and check out the artists.
