071: How Diet Culture Is Deeply Ingrained In Our Choices and How to Overcome It with Lauren Balterman Wake Up Call

    • Self-Improvement

Don’t think you’re affected by diet culture? Think again. If you’ve ever stepped on a scale and didn’t like the number or thought “carbs are bad,” then you’ve been affected by diet culture. Diet culture is not just physical but also mental, tying a disproportionately large amount of self-worth to appearance. But it's more than that… It affects our beliefs, which ultimately drive our behavior. In this episode, I chatted with Lauren Balterman about diet culture, how to unpack it, and bring about your best self.

Lauren Balterman is a Licensed Counselor, Certified Personal Trainer, certified in NLP, and holds an advanced degree in nutrition. She has been helping transform women's minds and bodies for a decade. Her mission is to guide and support women to become the greatest and most fulfilled version of themselves through mindset work, nutrition and physical fitness.

Some key takeaways from this episode include:

Diet culture is more than just ads for fad diets. It’s the sum of all the messaging we receive about body image, our value as it relates to food, and misinformation about food and exercise.
Get inquisitive. Be your own detective and start seeking your own truth. Dig deep and figure out where your behaviors stem from and what’s actually true about nutrition and exercise.
Health is more than physical; it’s mental and emotional, too. Your behavior stems from your deeply held beliefs, which can then be reinforced by our behaviors. We need to examine these beliefs in order to change our behavior.

Welcome to the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins (that’s me!). My goal in this podcast is to share valuable and actionable tips on what I call the “Core Four” - mindfulness, movement, habits, and growth - so you can build a life that feels true to you. I will be interviewing people who have had a “wake up call” that their good-on-paper life wasn’t lighting them up, and what they did to change that. Join us every week for a new episode of the Wake Up Call Podcast with Alicia Hopkins!
