Michelle shares her story of surrender that she learned through her bouts with generalized anxiety disorder. Her new book is called I Surrender All (Sort Of): Laying Down Our Plans so God Can Do the Impossible, talks about what she learned about surrender.
There was not any area of my life that my illness did not touch. My marriage, my finances, my relationships were all impacted. As someone who is a type-A proactive get the job done kind of person, surrender is counterintuitive, or at least that was my understanding. Surrender to me meant not doing anything. But as I searched Scripture, I came across Exodus 14, this is where the Israelites are in battle, see Pharaoh approaching them and quickly realize they are outnumbered. Scripture says they get afraid, start grumbling complain to Moses, basically say, “Well, we said we didn’t want to be here.” And Moses reminds them of God’s sovereignty and his faithfulness and says in verse 13-14, “Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Which is counterintuitive, why would you actually put down a weapon? You’d think he’d say gear up! But he actually asks them to be the best weapon they have and one they’ll ever need. Once they lay down the weapons, God is allowed to act on their behalf.
That’s what this book is about. It’s all the areas of our lives that we hold tightly. I’m a pastor’s wife and in our first church we were practicing for worship team, and our guitar player says, as we were singing the hymn I Surrender All, he says, “That’s not really true is it? We sing I surrender all, but we really only surrender some.” And I never forgot that statement. And it's so true. We want to give God all control but then we hold back areas we don’t want to give up. Like, I’ll give you my life, but just let my kids follow you and not turn away. I’ll give you my life, but I don’t want to be less selfish in my marriage. That’s what this book is about. What areas of your life do you need to lay down so God can work in your life.
