great show from legendary artist
tl;dr: Amazing and unique show that you should definitely listen to. If you don’t know who Dan Bern is, then also read points 2-3 below. You are in for a treat.
Dan Bern made a podcast, yesss!
I am four episodes in and it’s even better than my (very high) expectations. Can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
Three points, one about the podcast and the other two about the Bernstein himself:
The show: Amazing production value, great storytelling, and a suspenseful plot. Still manages to keep the vibe mostly light though. Some fun self-deprecating humor sprinkled in. Bern has a beautiful and unique singing voice, and it translates to the spoken word incredibly. The sound effects and background noise make for a really engaging listen too – draws you in like a movie or TV show. Looking forward to the upcoming episodes. I won’t say anything about the plot, because you should just listen!
About Dan Bern: Dan Bern is a national treasure, and IMO the most underappreciated singer-songwriter of my lifetime. He’s released maybe a dozen albums of beautiful, weird, and thought-provoking folk/rock/?? music. He has also done songwriting for some Hollywood movies that you have probably seen. And he wrote a book like 15yrs ago which is as cool as it is weird – and it is super weird.
Recommendations: If you’re new to Dan Bern, start by listening to one of these albums: New American Language; 50 Eggs; or Breathe. The 1997 self-titled LP is also great but decidedly weirder, which is why I’m suggesting others as an entry point! A lot of people say he sounds like Bob Dylan upon first listen.
As you can tell I am kind of a Dan Bern stan, but seriously: listen to this show and also the albums I mentioned in point 3. :p
Amazing, not crappy
This podcast is engaging, has humor and of course: crappy songs. It has a plot which at the end of each episode makes you want to hear more. I hope for each season, this podcast has new clients. 😺
Aficionado
