Solomon's Wisdom (1 Kings 3:4-28)

2 Samuel 12:10 Now therefore, the sword will never leave your house because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hethite to be your own wife.’

1 Kings 3:4-15

"Ask. What should I give you?"

"...a receptive heart to judge your people and to discern between good and evil."

Proverbs 1:20-22

20 Wisdom calls out in the street;

she makes her voice heard in the public squares.

21 She cries out above the commotion;

she speaks at the entrance of the city gates:

22 “How long, inexperienced ones, will you love ignorance?

How long will you mockers enjoy mocking

and you fools hate knowledge?

The simple- someone who doesn't know what they don't know, lacks experience

Mockers/Scoffers- someone who knows, doesn't care, and will ridicule you for trying to correct them

Proverbs 9:6-9

6 Leave inexperience behind, and you will live;

pursue the way of understanding.

7 The one who corrects a mocker

will bring abuse on himself;

the one who rebukes the wicked will get hurt.

8 Don’t rebuke a mocker, or he will hate you;

rebuke the wise, and he will love you.

9 Instruct the wise, and he will be wiser still;

teach the righteous, and he will learn more.

Fool- someone who knows and doesn't care

Wisdom- the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgement

"The owl of Minerva begins its flight only with the onset of dusk." –Hegel

"Wisdom begins its flight only with the onset of dusk."

1 Kings 3:9 So give your servant a receptive heart to judge your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of yours?”

Discernment is peering around the corner when it is getting dark.

1 Kings 3:5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. God said, “Ask. What should I give you?”

"Ask. What should I give you?"

"What should I give you?"

It is about gift, about what has been accomplished and what God is doing.
We are to receive what God has given and use it in the service of others.
It all comes back to God's loving kindness (hesed).
As God's people, there is a need to constantly resubmit to the answer to this question–"What should I give you?"
