    Touring Career Workshop

    Touring Career Workshop

Unless you work for a major corporation within the music industry, and are blessed to have a great benefits package, you must fend for yourself in order to provide the tools needed to get by in life: health insurance, retirement plans, and the general skills to run your own business. Make no mistake about it, if you are a freelance technician in the touring business – you ARE your own business. This is where the vision of the Touring Career Workshop comes to life: a simple workshop where a lot of the success tools needed are presented by experts in each of their respective fields.
One of the resources that Touring Career Workshop provides is dealing with mental health. Their “All Access Online” program provides mental health counseling with a designated counselor either online, or out on the road depending on the conditions, giving a chance for touring professionals to discuss their difficult moments and work through those challenges that arise, whether it be time away from home on the road, or those day to day life situations that sometimes pop up. Executive Director Chris Lisle, along with special guest co-host Sharon Lee who is the CEO of High Road Trucking, join us in the studio to explain how these, and other services and opportunities are available to those who work in the music touring industry.
The Touring Career Workshop is a free annual event created by industry veterans Chris Lisle and Erik Parker, designed to serve and educate their colleagues in the touring music industry. The inaugural TCW was held in November 2011 at Belmont University, and was attended by over fifty industry professionals. In the past several years well hundreds of touring industry people have attended their events. TCW is an official IRS 501c3 non profit.

    The Japanese Tea Ceremony

    The Japanese Tea Ceremony

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding the nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, 17 years later, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world.
On this special edition episode of The Business Side of Music, frequent guest, and music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, explains how Music Store Day came about, its significance in the music business, and how it benefits not only the brick and mortar record stores, but also the independent artist and their artistry. We also discuss the difference between vinyl, CD’s, and mp3 files.
Music platforms mentioned on this episode include: Tidal, Qobuz, & Deezer

Making It Big One Gig At A Time

Making It Big One Gig At A Time

Stone Senate has been called “a heavier version of Lynyrd Skynyrd, crossed with The Allman Brothers Band”. While being mentioned in such heady company is flattering, it is important to note Stone Senate is most definitely not a retro act. They are taking what came naturally from their collective influences a step further and making a name for themselves in the world of modern country rock.
The band is fronted by vocalist/ guitarist Clint Woolsey’s smoldering, soulful vocals and unmistakable stage presence. Meanwhile stage left and stage right are burning down with dual lead guitars/vocals of James Beau Edwards and Brother Ted Hennington. Add to that the bonded rhythm section of Kieran Cronley on bass and David “DZ” Zettler on drums/ vocals, and you have caught lightning in a bottle.
Stone Senate has toured with Bulletboys, Uli Jon Roth, Davisson Brothers Band, and Tantric, and direct support for bands such as Styx, Collective Soul, Jackyl, Cowboy Mouth, Saliva, Little Texas, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Quiet Riot, Asleep at the Wheel, Lit, Alien Ant Farm, Tom Kiefer Band, Billy Gibbons and the BFG’s, Tim Montana, Uncle Kracker, Rehab, David Alan Coe, Whitford – St Holmes, David Lee Murphy, Andy Ross, Mike Zito, John Micheal Montgomery, Eddie Montgomery, and Confederate Railroad to name a few.

    The Roadie Cartel

    The Roadie Cartel

‘Watching Guns N’ Roses from the side of the stage in London, standing on the set of Saturday Night Live with Paul Simon, receiving a signed skateboard from Carrie Underwood, and mixing front-of-house sound for Kiss…’
These are just a handful of experiences in the rearview mirror of Phillip Kriz’s extraordinary journey in the music industry as a sought-after “roadie” tech, band assistant, and trusted tour confidant. Following nearly 15 years as a dependable road dog, he embarks on what might be his wildest trip yet, making his literary debut with the fictional novel, The Roadie Cartel, in 2023.
This action-packed thriller follows a family immersed in drug trafficking under the cover of the music business. It’s about what could go on behind backstage...
“It’s the struggle between good and evil set in a world I know very well,” he says. “It follows a character who believed one path was her destiny, only to find out where she was really meant to be all along.”
Born and raised in El Paso, TX, Phillip discovered music through his parents. Beyond spinning classics by Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, mom even played Howard Stern on their drive to school. Predestining a future in the business, she also brought Phillip to his first concert — U2 and Public Enemy at the Sun Bowl. Not to mention, he caught Robert Plant & Jimmy Page and Alan Jackson when they rolled through town. However, a Pink Floyd gig would be the point of no return for him. After a stint working in the food service industry in San Antonio, he attended and graduated from Full Sail University in Orlando FL where he also worked his first production gigs. Eventually, he landed his “dream job” at production powerhouse Clair Global. Coming full circle, his first assignment placed him on a jaunt with Guns N’ Roses in 2010. He hit the road for the better part of the next decade. Clients included Alicia Keys, The Scorpions, Justin Bieber, Florida Georgia Line, Paul Simon, Carrie Underwood, and Queen & Adam Lambert, to name a few. At the onset of the Global Pandemic, the business shutdown, and Phillip found himself at home in Nashville, where he found himself beginning the journey as an author.

Where in The Song is The Moment?

Where in The Song is The Moment?

You crafted your songs. You've put your heart and soul into them, but when you're on stage, the response from the audience is lackluster at best. Is it the material you're performing. In many cases, while the songs are excellent, the presentation is not. Where in the song is the moment on stage that defines who you are? This is where Tom Jackson Productions steps in.
As a trained Live Music Producer for Tom Jackson Productions, Amy Wolter offers her
years of personal experience onstage, along with a multi-layered musical background, to
help artists engage their audiences by creating compelling, memorable live shows.

Amy has helped hundreds of artists of all genres, prep for major headline and opening act
tour slots, and showcases for labels, and spoken at Artist Workshops around the country.
A few of her clients include Grammy award winners The Band Perry & Lacrae, CMA and
ACM –winning country acts Gloriana and Thompson Square, Riser House country artist
Dillon Carmichael, Capitol Christian’s breakout artist Anne Wilson, contestants for The
Voice & American Idol, Dove award winners Francesca Battistelli & Sidewalk Prophets, as
well as top Canadian artists & Canadian Country Music Association winners High Valley,
    Jess Moskaluke & Chad Brownlee.
Amy works with artists at all levels, empowering them to have confidence and authority
onstage. "I've learned by a lot from being onstage myself, and know the importance of
connecting with an audience. If a crowd doesn't enjoy watching you, or have an
‘experience’ at your show, then what's the point of them seeing you live?" says Amy. "The
ideas and tools in Tom Jackson’s Live Music Method are absolutely career-changing when
an artist understands the power of a great live performance!”

An Alligator Walking Thru The Everglades

An Alligator Walking Thru The Everglades

Continuing our ongoing series of "Between The Notes" episodes with music industry veteran Jack Sharkey, We have a discussion that is often overlooked, or at the very least ignored... The loss of hearing due to years of performing live music. Jack, who himself suffers from hearing loss because of loud volumes on stage (along with a inexperienced sound engineer on occasion), had permanent damage done to his ears after decades performing live. Ironically, Sharkey also works in the audiophile business for a speaker company, and explains how hearing damage can affect your day to day living, whether its with family, or in the workplace. This outcome comes down to causing injury that can be permanent if not addressed. Jack shares thoughts on how to prevent hearing loss, and what it takes to get some of those frequencies back if the damage is done.
As for the episode title, you'll just have to tune in and listen (it comes from the usual antics Jack and Bob do while in the studio!).
