In Episode 12 Gabby speaks with Kristen Ellis about Naturopathic Principle #4 - First do no Harm / Primum Non Nocere.
Kristen is a qualified naturopath and nutritionist with a particular interest in mental and behavioural health conditions, such as ADHD, addiction, anxiety and gut dysfunction. She has a particular interest in how food affects mental health, and combines her passion for using food as medicine with herbal therapies to provide holistic, individualised care.
In this episode, Gabby & Kristen discuss many ideas relating to First do no Harm such as:
- How naturopaths prioritise non-invasive treatments to minimise risk of harm
- How treatments should work synergistically with the healing processes of the body rather than suppress, otherwise this may lead to longer term harm in the form of chronic health issues
- The importance of practitioners recognising their scope of practice & knowing when to refer on
- Setting clear boundaries & having open lines of communication between practitioner & patient
- Respecting each person's unique needs & wishes by meeting them where they're at
- Informed consent & not taking advantage of people's trust
