#130: Does Addiction Increase The Intensity Of Abuse‪?‬ Therapy Brothers

    • Mental Health

Caller Adriene's Question: "This question is for your last podcast regarding what works and doesn’t work in betrayal trauma recovery. I do agree with everything that was said in there. However, as someone who has been through betrayal trauma, addiction with her spouse, and abuse with her spouse I just wish the abuse part could be validated a little bit more. I agree that the abuse model can keep us stuck so we need to change up the model a little bit. However, once I learned about abuse and put a name to what I was experiencing that was when full healing began and I stopped being the fantasy wife for my husband and really upped my safety and boundaries. That’s actually what made him want to change. When we just focused on the addiction it ended up feeding his entitlement and integrity problems. So in my opinion knowing about the emotional and psychological abuse of an addict changes everything. At least it did for me. do you think that addiction and abuse are two separate things but that addiction can exaggerate abuse tenfold?"
