15: Speaking Hebrew with The Kefar Speaking Tongues

    • Language Learning

Hello Language Lovers!

Today I have the honor of bringing you the second installation in this summer’s “Summer School” series, where all summer long we’re having conversations with language teachers. In this episode I’m speaking with T’helah, a Hebrew teacher and the founder of The Kefar. The Kefar is an online Hebrew education platform that teaches the language in an accessible, engaging and culturally responsive way.

In this episode, T’helah and I talk about growing up in NYC and the languages we were exposed to growing up here. We talk about her method of teaching and the emphasis she places on creating content and materials for her students that is inclusive and she touches briefly on the comprehensive input method which I’ve linked in the show notes so if you’re not familiar with it as I was, you can check it out.

We talked about diversity and the need for representation in language learning especially for African American learners. It’s so important for us to see ourselves reflected in this space and see people who look like us speaking multiple languages and engaging in cultures around the world. We say this in the episode but it can never be said enough: Representation matters.

If you notice, this is the second time I’ve sat down with a guest to have a conversation about Hebrew. I just want to point out that the beauty of this podcast is that no matter how many people I can have conversations with on the same language, we all come to language in different ways, with different experiences and different backgrounds. I hope this illustrates how diverse all of our experiences can be and how much we stand to learn from one another if we just take the time to listen.
