The New Evangelicals Podcast

I love this podcast! Tim is an incredible host. I didn’t grow up in the Evangelical church, but I did grow up in a very traditional, conservative Lutheran church. Once I started attending a nondenominational church I began to realize that I didn’t necessarily agree with everything my church growing up believed. This podcast is a feel good one for me because it helps validate my own deconstruction of faith and provides a safe space for me to explore that without judgement and pressure.

The Affordable Care Act was actually a compromise on what Democrats tried to get passed. Obama wanted Congress to pass a Medicare type healthcare for all people. The majority of Democrats were in favor, however, there were a few “blue dog” Dems and all republicans that made that impossible. So ACA was designed as a compromise and modeled after plans that existed in Massachusetts.

After beginning deconstruction mid-2019 and then watching evangelicalism spiral during the pandemic, I felt so very alone. No one in my family or friend group really fully understands what it meant to unravel an entire lifetime of toxic doctrine, or they flew through deconstruction and can’t relate to the journey it has been for me. I am so grateful to have the New Evangelicals as a sympathetic group of “friends” who put words to a lot of feelings I’ve been having over the last few years. Thank you for the work you are doing, Tim, April, and guests. You are so appreciated.

I consider myself left of center. I very much value evangelicals who Speak against the trends in the church among believers (of which I am not). I cannot help but tune out or roll my eyes at low information takes on guns or other identitarian politics outside their wheel house. Obviously this is their show and they can say speak on whatever they like. I do wonder if they don’t damage their reach and the persuasiveness of their arguments and observations when they go on rants far outside areas they could be considered experts on. This is a small quibble I suppose. And the show certainly provides a useful and valuable counter point to that of many evangelicals.
