#23: The girls are back in town: monetising passion, representing talent Let's Talk Startups

    • Entrepreneurship

This week’s guest is turning the volume UP! Because however noisy it gets in startup land, it can always get louder.

For founder Sophia, there is always space to amplify a diverse range of voices, and that’s what ‘Violet Simon’ is all about: making sure that women from all backgrounds have a platform. It’s a great ethic and – to make things even better – she’s built a business out of it! Sophia believes in shouting from the rooftops, so let’s hear what she’s shouting about. Let’s talk startups!

Born from a need for representation, ‘Violet Simon’ produces inspiring articles and an eye-opening magazine-book that will have you itching to follow in the footsteps of the women it features. Driven by the personal dedication and commitment of a woman who cares, ‘Violet Simon’ is a testimony to all that Sophia stands for, and we’re on the edge of our seats waiting to hear exactly what makes her tick! From seeing competitors as allies, to monetising a calling, Sophia knows all about building a principled and passionate startup from scratch.

However, the going hasn’t always been smooth. There are questions that plague every young business: how do you find the right connections? How do you get heard when everyone is making noise? And – most importantly – how do you turn a good idea into a great business? Well, we wouldn’t want to divulge all of those answers too soon, but – for ‘Violet Simon’ – it has something to do with authentic storytelling, representation and equality. Not bad foundations!

Here at blazon, we believe that a successful startup is one that meets a need. Certainly, there has long been a need to correct the gender narrative and there are some uncomfortable statistics to prove this: for example, 69% of women would prefer to understate their accomplishments, but 83% would value hearing about others’. Sophia has seen the need for change. From the lack of coverage of women’s struggles, to the need for encouraging of all women to be bold and take up space, ‘Violet Simon’ has heard the call and responded with zeal.

With so much need for uplifting women, publications like Sophia’s represent a union between business and empowerment… and what a perfect pairing that is. Startups ARE empowering, so a startup that is ABOUT empowerment is something that you already know @Nargis and @Demos are excited to get their teeth into! They’ll be sussing out how social media has worked (or hasn’t), how competitors can also be friends, and what to do when you find yourself facing rejection.

From creating a platform for your passion, to capitalising on your cause, Sophia knows how to run a business that matters. She makes space for women to be bold, and who better to do so than a bold woman?!
Are you ready to get inspired? Let’s talk startups!
