For this week’s Hidden Gem, I wanted to re-air a takeaway from Episode 38 with Tony Overbay about how to maintain positive relationships with our teenagers. What I love about this interview is that his takeaways apply to parents with kids of all ages. It’s easy to talk about wanting to be a safe place for our kids, but how do we actually do that? Are we prepared for them to tell us things that are uncomfortable to hear? Tony shares things we can start when our kids are little that will help when they’re teenagers, OR things we can tweak and start doing now if your children are already into their teens. Tony Overbay is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist and host of the Virtual Couch podcast. Tony works with a lot of teenagers in his private practice and it has given him the opportunity to, in turn, work with a lot of parents to help interactions with their kids become more productive and positive.

Welcome to Hidden Gems, a special series of the 3 in 30 podcast. This week, we are sharing an excerpt from Episode 174, Why to Try a Creative Hobby (Even if You Think You’ll Stink at It) with Lisa Funk. Lisa is the founder of HandLettered Design and mother of four. She has struggled with depression and anxiety and has discovered a variety of tools that have helped her reclaim her happiness and her mental health, namely through creativity and hand lettering.
I love how this takeaway goes along with Alli Roper’s episode that aired on Monday about why to continue learning as a busy mom, and that your brain is not mush. I knew I wanted to air this takeaway from Lisa as more encouragement that creating and learning just for fun is so important. We want that for our kids, and this takeaway gives you permission to want that for yourself as well. And while Lisa focuses on creating with your hands, I believe you can apply it to reading, writing, listening to a podcast, or learning or creating in any way that brings you joy. I hope this excerpt gives you encouragement, permission, or even a laugh as she talks about her love and commitment to dance parties at home, not because she’s particularly good at dancing, but solely because dancing is FUN.

Episode 273
Rachel,
Thank you for all your work in creating this podcast and community. I just listened to episode #273. Wow, what a gift you have for giving expression to emotion. You are so articulate and I really appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. This was a beautiful episode. I am so thankful for this resource as I navigate motherhood and all my other life roles. Hugs to you!!
Quick, to the point, and enlightening
I’ve been inspired so many times by these podcast episodes relating to being a healthy mom. The format is helpful for my brain to follow and makes it simple to consider and implement. I appreciate the personal touches to each episode too. Thank you for this contribution to the podcast/mom world!
Uplifting, inspiring, applicable, attainable!
I love this podcast so much! I originally learned about it at a “Favorite Things” party years ago. I have been hooked ever since and recommend it over and over. I don’t partake of a lot of “self-help” media. I was drawn in by some of the different holiday and/or tradition type episodes. Once I listened to a couple of those, I decided to go to the beginning and listen to them all! This podcast is so inspiring and the best part is that inspiration is attainable! I draw so much goodness from each episode that I wish I could expand my brain capacity in order to do ALL of it all at once. I used to save the episodes I really enjoyed and knew I wanted to go back to, but soon realized, I was saving more than I wasn’t. Even the episodes I don’t think are applicable to me or my phase of life STILL have something to take away. I am not a words person and I honestly can’t find the words to convey how much I truly love this podcast. Rachel is such a kind and genuine person. I’ve reached out to her a couple of times over the years and even as busy as she is, she has always responded! The first time I sent a message and she actually responded, I totally geeked out! I couldn’t believe it, haha! Love her! Love the podcast! So thankful I found it!!
