#30: Unpacking growth: finding investment for an out-of-the-box business Let's Talk Startups

In today’s conversation, we’re talking to Guillaume Elkrief, founder of MosaiQ Labs, a company thinking outside of the box, and refusing to fit in one either. Developing AI productivity tools, Guillaume’s company is on the cusp of exciting developments in technology but demonstrating a clear identity in startup world has been tough. So, we're putting him in the hot seat to share his process of making a new box all of your own!

We’re discussing the pitfalls of trying to do too much, as well as the need for painful honesty when it’s time to strip back. Investors need to understand exactly what they are investing in, and customers need to see the USP. You can have all the passion in the world, but if your mission isn’t clear, your product won’t sell! 

As a founder, Guillaume certainly has passion, vision and drive, but often a new business needs to start small and grow gradually. Frustratingly, that can sometimes mean that overflowing ideas can only trickle through slowly. How do you prioritise parts of a project that you have poured yourself into? Well, let’s ask someone who has done it! 

Pitching to investors was hard work, but from the challenging process was born a company with a clear mission: to use AI to easily organise and analyse information. Guillaume was faced with many ‘no’s before he found some ‘yes’es, so Nargis and Demos will be doing some thorough quizzing to find out how his approach changed.

We all know that thinking outside of the box is great, but too many ideas at once will sink a business before it has chance to find its feet. There is a discrepancy between the wants of the consumer and the investor: you sell a product to the consumer, but a business to the investor. It’s a different pitch. Guillaume learned this the hard way, but he’s sharing his lessons with us, so that you don't have to. 

We’ll also be thinking about the changing and evolving nature of teams. Not everyone is the right fit, so how do you decide who is, and what do you do when you’ve hired the wrong person? Is it helpful for employees to have startup experience, or do you want someone from a corporate background? It can feel like a minefield, so we better pick some brains!
