013 - An Ode to the Jaywalkers, Radiogenomics and Others 3DEEPERCUTS
-
- Fiction
What is this guy talking about?
Its 3DEEPERCUTS!
Strange things happen on the streets of Houston.
It's wild out there.
Anything goes - including the shameless act of jay-walking.
In 90% of cities, jay-walking is perpetrated by people who have bottomed out on their luck.
But these are tough times.
To a man down on his luck, the scenario of getting run over by a Silverado isn't bad, when compared to panhandling for heroin.
When compared to rounding on your 20th inpatient with a BMI of 45 and COVID related acute respiratory failure..
It's a no-brainer.
Silverado please.
Around the medical center, the jaywalkers appear dutiful, well-groomed, clean-shaven and (apparently) educated.
They are healthcare workers.
They wear white coats, scrubs and clogs.
They're not jaywalking far away from a cross walk.
The cross walk is 10-feet away, but they would still prefer to risk their lives.
One-by-one, they cross the street.
A nurse dodges a Chevy.
A surgery resident leaps over a Civic.
A neurologist zombie-walks over the trunk of a Tesla.
It was balls-deep into the COVID Pandemic. All concerned had forgotten the number of surges and lock-downs.
They'd forgotten their kids at daycare.
They'd run out of Pediasure.
They'd worn the stethoscopes down to rubber.
Burned out they were.
These healthcare workers had been beaten into indifference.
I saw a couple of them eating donuts while jay-walking.
Like a final treat before surrendering oneself to a speeding Silverado with a lift-kit and a Confederate flag.
This is what fatigue looks like.
I remember their faces.
Enjoy, Professors.
See you next time.
