Rising Appalachia is a folk band with southern roots, founded by sisters Leah and Chloe Smith. Rising Appalachia has toured all over the world, from Italy to South America, to San Francisco and Leah and Chloe’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.

These multi-talented sisters write their own songs, play several instruments including guitar, banjo, and fiddle, and have been releasing music since 2005.

They currently have 7 albums in their discography, their most recent album called “The Lost Mystique of Being in the Know” was released in 2021. Leah and Chloe are passionate about building bridges between cultures and stories within their music.

Carmen Acevedo Butcher is the translator of The Cloud of Unknowing, a Georgia Author of the Year Awardee, and Practice of the Presence by Brother Lawrence. Her dynamic work in spirituality and the power of language has garnered interest from various media, including the BBC and NPR’s Morning Edition.

A Fulbright scholar at University of London and Fulbright Senior Lecturer at Sogang University, Carmen currently teaches in the College Writing Programs at UC Berkeley.
