41: Relationship Dynamics & Effective Communication - with Elizabeth Earnshaw, Licensed Marriage & Couples Therapist Trust & Thrive

    • Mental Health

Elizabeth Earnshaw is a Licensed Marriage and Certified Gottman Method Couples Therapist.

Elizabeth is passionate about helping individuals and couples learn how to have better relationships with themselves and other people. She believes deep healing can happen in the context of safe relationships.

She has a husband, toddler, and a dog named Nola that she adores.

In this episode, we discuss many different aspects of relationships. We touch on the four main communication pitfalls. These include being critical, defensiveness, stonewalling, and contempt. We also explore the differences between codependency and autonomy, along with power dynamics.

Elizabeth shares the importance of embracing differences in a relationship. In order to truly thrive in a relationship, we must stay curious and create a culture of respect.

We also touch on self-awareness, and why working through one's own issues (losses, traumas, etc.) is vital in order to feel safe in one's relationship. We cannot depend on another individual to do our self-discovery work for us.

At the end of the day, the most important relationship we have is the one we have with ourselves.
