61 The Power of Women’s Brains and Aging with Dr. Louann Brizendine The Power of the Only

"Biology is destiny unless you know what it's doing to you." - Dr. Louann Brizendine
Today's guest, Dr. Louann Brizendine, New York Times Bestselling Author of "The Female Brain" and "The Male Brain" says it's time for a new and radically positive understanding of aging for women.
In this episode, she shares actionable science-backed steps for increasing longevity and well-being from her new book "The Upgrade-How Women's Brain Gets Stronger and Better In Mid-life and Beyond."
Dr. Brizendine went through her own struggle with her health while she was studying medicine as an undergraduate. Following her experience of being ignored and disbelieved, she was inspired to work in neuropsychiatry and has been on a mission ever since to help women understand their bodies and brains so they can be empowered.
While studying the differences between males and females as a student, she found that she didn't agree with the general attitudes that only men's bodies should be studied and that female hormones would interfere with accurate results. Her belief that our biological differences should be celebrated made her somewhat of an Only in her field at the time-- and that's what inspired her to persevere.
Listen in as Dr. Brizendine shares her Only story, how she overcomes her challenges, and why women's lives get better in the second half.  We also talk about the four phases of The Transition, what women can do in the pre-transition phase of menopause to optimize their health, and the simple move you can do every day to help your brain.
"I really learned what it's like as a patient not to be listened to." - Dr. Louann Brizendine
Louann is also the Lynne ad Marc Benioff Endowed Chair in Clinical Psychiatry a the University of California San Francisco and founder of the UCSF’s Women’s Mood and Hormone Clinic. She completed her degree in Neurobiology at UC Berkeley, graduated from Yale School of Medicine, and completed her residency at Harvard Medical School.
