Excellent!

As an American that’s been living in Japan for around a decade now, this podcast has been great. Lots of stuff I can relate with. Keep it up!

Tina is annoying and dial back the profanity

I’ve been listening to the show for many years now and normally would give it 5/5 stars easy as Mark and John still do a great job in maintaining a very informative and entertaining podcast filled with passion for all that is Japan despite all the many regulars besides them who have left over the years but wow, is Toena (pronounced Tina) ever annoying now. She started off as a fairly good addition about two years ago and I actually enjoyed listening to her for the first few months or so, however, I’m not sure if it’s because it feels like she’s gradually been trying too hard to stand out on the show overall or what but she steadily has become very loud and incredibly unfunny and obnoxious as time has gone on with her endless, headache inducing, foul mouthed, kinda-drunken rants flipping out over every tedious little thing she has no time or patience for with her endless whiny spiels related to every other game having ‘too many mechanics!!,’ ‘too many menus!!’ (not even talking about Monster Hunter, stuff like that is understandable and a low bar) and most games taking more time than she cares to learn not to mention the constant tired schtick of ‘Haha isn’t it funny how gleefully ignorant and intolerant I am of so many facets of the series and genres that this podcast discusses which my whole line of work in this country revolves around to begin with?? Oh look at me, I’m tipsy again!’ It’s also not a great look when you freely say the full sum of your experience related to the show itself is that you only listened to 1-2 episodes before you got invited to be on the podcast mainly because you were friends with someone on the show. Sarah could be really loud and aggressive as well and also was on the show due to being a friend but she backed it all up by being very well informed and had a fun, infectious enthusiasm for the most of the games she discussed. I will say though, Toena has her moments too, the “Leave it to the masters” story was great. As was also discussed on the 300th episode there’s obviously been a lot of cursing on the show over the years and a few years ago even Mark himself has said he’s considered cursing less for family reasons since he had a nephew or other family member listening, as someone who’d also like to be able to listen to the podcast out loud more often I’d like to see less cursing as well, not everybody likes or feels comfortable with casual profanity. Also more talk about 2D arcade shooters please and just launch the Patreon already, it’s been how many years? Sheesh. Patreon launch = 5/5 stars again.

Boring

I started with their 12/10/21 episode as I was trying to find a good video game podcast to listen to while I wait for the next nextlander episode to drop and man was this a mistake. The very beginning was so obnoxious and annoying I almost stopped then but was like no give them time. You then get to their one guest who made a game and they move on from his game to talk about dark souls and he goes back to his game that has no point of being brought up again and goes into it before getting back on topic. Then you have Tina I think is her name is so very annoying with her attitude and extremely unfunny jokes. Couldn’t even finish the full episode. Will not be trying another one.
