    Ep. 6: Just Say Yes

With the departure of guitarist Greg Wood in late 2006, Punchline welcomed their talented hometown friend Jon Belan into the band, setting the stage for an era of change and artistic exploration. From the exciting tours that took them all the way to the UK to the unforgettable recording sessions of the Just Say Yes album, the band vividly relives these sometimes tumultuous but always creative times. This episode explores the band’s newfound confidence in self-releasing their music after being on a label for previous albums, which marked a defining crossroads in their journey into a DIY music landscape. While some members embraced this challenge, others gracefully stepped away. THIS is the story of Punchline from late 2006 until early 2009, also known as the Just Say Yes era.

    Ep. 5: 37 Everywhere

    Ep. 5: 37 Everywhere

In early 2005, Punchline faced a career crossroads with the departure of guitarist and vocalist Paul Menotiades. With determination on high in the face of adversity, the original three members turned to longtime friend Greg Wood — a shredding guitarist with a unique voice and a commanding stage presence — to fill the void in their lineup. What followed was a relentless international tour schedule and the recording and release of a landmark album. In this episode, the band and an array of friends and colleagues tell the story of the 37 Everywhere era.

    Ep. 4: Action

    Ep. 4: Action

In the summer of 2003, Punchline headed to Chicago to record their Fueled By Ramen debut full-length Action with up-and-coming producer Sean O’Keefe. These 12 heartfelt and energetic songs would expose the band to a bigger audience than ever before, both through rigorous touring and widespread distribution. While a growing fanbase and a huge hometown release show for the record brought a lot of momentum, the constant self-comparisons to successful peers added crazy amounts of pressure. Coupled with serious issues within the band, Punchline hit a breaking point in early 2005. For the first time ever, the people who lived the Action era talk openly and honestly about the peaks and valleys of this unforgettable time.

This is so much fun

I went to Pittsburgh for a couple shows. Punchline happened to be one of the bands on one of the shows at Club Laga. They were so solid, and so much fun. I made sure to talk to them later that night about bringing them down to my hometown of Charleston, WV, for some shows. This was the early 2000s.

You know how things have gone since then - just up and up. I’ve loved listening to this podcast and catching up on some of the things I’ve missed since the last time I saw them FOREVER ago. Honestly, all the success and love they get couldn’t happen to a sweeter group of dudes. It makes me miss them even more. It’s such a solid, fun listen.

Just a man crying in a mail truck

My buddy and I once went to a show and Steve came over and said “hi, I’m Steve. I’m in a band called Punchline.” We were not only there to see Punchline, but we had already been huge fans for over a decade at that point. (Enough to drive 3.5 hours to see their 15 and eventually 20 year anniversary shows). Even though at first he was just trying to meet new people and maybe gain a new fan or two, he stood there and talked with us for 15-20minutes. To me, this encapsulates the type of people the guys in this band are. They are really great approachable guys, and that not only comes through in the podcast, but it makes me feel like even someone who doesn’t know their music would enjoy listening to this pod. My music taste has changed over the years. Punchlines music has changed over the years. But listening back to their music always brings me back to a fun time in my life. Getting to hear their stories from those times is incredible. Can’t wait for all the future episodes.
