How to Pray Like Jesus | Psalm 118

How to Pray Like Jesus | Psalm 118

Today’s discussion and prayer is on Psalm 118. We know that Jesus immersed himself in this particular psalm because he quotes from two separate verses from it on two separate occasions in the gospels (v. 22 in Matt 21:42, and v. 26 in Matt 23:39). No doubt Psalm 118 was a place Jesus spent much time in personal meditation and prayer. We should do the same.

We know that Jesus quoted from the Old Testament frequently throughout his ministry, but did you know that he referenced Psalms more than any other book? The verses in Psalms were integral in Jesus's prayer life. They were inspired by the Holy Spirit for our sake, to enrich our own prayer lives.

The foundational promise and call to response in this psalm is in the first verse, which is also repeated verbatim in the last verse.

    Psalm 118:1 ESV
“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”

This is a must-have belief for anyone hoping to experience the reality of who God is in their life. To see our horizontal circumstances through the vertical reality of all that The I AM is for us in Christ.

Join in as Pastor Dave Cover prayers through Psalm 118, focusing on verse 24:

    This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

We need to remind ourselves why we should have joy, love, and appreciation dominate our emotions every day.

Other verses discussed and prayed through in this episode:

    Psalm 118:6–7 ESV
The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The LORD is on my side as my helper.

    Psalm 118:22 ESV
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.

    Psalm 118:25 ESV
Save us, we pray, O LORD!

    Psalm 118:26 ESV
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!

    Psalm 118:28–29 ESV
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

What It Means to Think Vertically and Not Just Horizontally | Psalm 16:8-11

What It Means to Think Vertically and Not Just Horizontally | Psalm 16:8-11

There are two ways to look at life: horizontally and vertically. Lots of people have a horizontal perspective, but Pastor Dave Cover challenges us to look vertically for a more joyful, fulfilling life. Join in as he discusses and prays through Psalm 16.8-11:

I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

What Turned My Prayer Life Right-Side Up | Psalm 16:1-6

What Turned My Prayer Life Right-Side Up | Psalm 16:1-6

When Dave Cover was in college he developed a small practice that turned his prayer life upside down, or actually right-side up. It was a watershed moment. To this day he thinks about his life as "pre-that moment and post-that moment. ... Before that moment my walk with God was learning things about God. But after that it was getting to know God."

In this prayer podcast Dave shares that small practice with us: praying scripture back to God. He teaches us how to do it by example. He focuses on Psalm 16:1-6, an ancient prayer among ancient prayers which Jesus said were written by the Holy Spirit (Mk 12:36). Dave offers fresh insights on this Psalm and guides us through praying it back to God.
