A Farmer-ish Podcast is dedicated to farming arts, education, and philosophy. As we face difficult times, many find themselves more interested in taking a step back, growing their own food, becoming makers, and living more connectedly with nature, as well as their local farming communities. Our goal is to provide engaging conversation on these topics, with a little bit of the arts on the side.

Celebrating Bees on World Bee Day

Celebrating Bees on World Bee Day

In this episode, we honor World Bee Day with an interview with a very special guest, author Loree Griffin Burns, who has written a new book entitled Honeybee Rescue. After a short introduction that explores little things we can all do to help the bees, I sit down with Loree to talk about her new book about bees, the struggles in keeping bees, and we end up talking about related topics such as science, curiosity, and writing.

We conclude this episode with a poetry reading of "Marie's Garden."

Animal Stories: An Interview with Sy Montgomery

In this episode, we focus on farm animals and what humans can learn from living so closely with animals. After Ron and I share some of our favorite farm animal stories, I interview award-winning author Sy Montgomery about her newest book, The Hawk's Way. Sy Montgomery is the author of many award-winning and best-selling books, including How to Be a Good Creature, The Soul of an Octopus, and Birdology. Her work focuses on illuminating the lives of animals and what we can learn from them. This episode concludes with a poem from the Farmer-ish journal by Ed Higgins entitled "Another Dead Chicken."

The First Episode: Why We Grow Our Own

The First Episode: Why We Grow Our Own

In this first episode, I speak with two special guests and farmers. The first guest is my husband, and in the first segment of this episode, we talk about how we got into farming for ourselves here in rural Maine and why we think it's so important to grow your own food and become more self sufficient.

My next guest is my dear friend and fellow teacher/farmer Katharyn Privett-Duren from Little Halawakee Farm. We talk about what motivates her as a farmer, what she grows and why, and the constant cycles of learning as farmers.

We wrap up our first episode with a short poem entitled "A Deliberate Life."

I’m really looking forward to the next episode!

I was tipped off by a Facebook post to tune in after the 1st episode aired, and I’m so glad I saw that! The content is so good and interesting, and spoken like a peer, and not a pro, and so inspiring! Cannot wait to hear more! I’m actually in the process of publishing my own podcast with a very similar theme, so hoping we can share some listeners!
