    Love in Action

    Love in Action

“Love” is a noun. But real love is a verb. Love is more than a feeling. Love is action. Jesus’ disciple John once wrote “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” Rather than mere kindly thoughts toward others, it’s got to be lived out in the nitty gritty, the inconvenient and the unpleasant in the real world. God’s Word shows us how to more consistently deny self and focus on others. God is the exclusive source where we can get love that we can give away; we don’t grind it out ourselves.

    The Real Deal About Zeal

    The Real Deal About Zeal

It’s so easy to get stuck in our lives somewhere and lose our passion for things that are important. Things we once spent lots of time, energy and expense on no longer seem to be that interesting or important. More to the point, does your spiritual passion ever cool off? Saint Paul reminds the Roman Christians, “Never be lacking in zeal.” (Romans 12:11 NIV) Other translations render the same thing differently, like “Never be lazy… serve the Lord enthusiastically.” (NLT) The answer is more than just shaming ourselves into trying harder to be better Christians/ The answer is in Jesus himself, who sends the Holy Spirit with divine energy that is enough to transform countless lives. He gives grace for people to become willing, never-quitting servants of His mission. He brings people to be fully-devoted followers of Jesus.

    Genuine Christian Love

    Genuine Christian Love

Lots of what people call “love” is really self-interest that requires other people. There are different things that we can easily confuse with genuine biblical love, like romantic or sexual attraction, or maybe even a good friendship. Those in themselves are not bad. God implanted sexual attraction into humans, and they had it even before the fall into sin. But, like all good things, it can be distorted and abused and results in a wide range of social problems, family fractures, and criminal activity. Friendship love is also a good thing that can be abused. It can take a nasty turn into toxic dependency and manipulation. The genuine love that Saint Paul refers to uses a Greek word agape. It means unconditional, self-sacrificing love. That’s the word used whenever it says that God loves. That’s the word used for genuine love, which comes only from God.

We Belong Together - Part 2

We Belong Together - Part 2

How do we do life together in these crazy times? All of us are struggling with that as we go through a time that tends to isolate us and increase anxiety. In the Bible, the letters of Paul so often refer to “one another” or “each other.” Those words are often preceded by imperative verbs like love, serve, encourage, pray for. You get the drift. The entire Christian life is outward focused toward others. What is grounded and sourced in Jesus is expressed lavishly toward each other. The Christian life is one of generously sharing our lives with others – our time, our affection, our concern, our resources. Then, St. Paul exhorts, “Do not grow weary in well-doing.” Let your serving others be energizing and fulfilling, adding meaning to you as you add value to others.

We Belong Together - Part I

We Belong Together - Part I

One of the core values of Ablaze is “We Do Life Together.” It comes straight from the Bible. It runs a lot deeper than just sharing a cup of coffee and small talk, but sharing life, sharing love, sharing burdens, sharing concerns, sharing joys. It means we become family and experience Holy Spirit-driven oneness. It runs deep because this stream flows from the wounds of Jesus. Jesus reaches to us one person at a time, but He does that to gather us into koinonia. He makes the many to be one. The Christian life is a corporate life. We know how hard it is to accomplish that when we feel trapped into virtual isolation by COVID-19. But we can all reach out to each other. The challenge is great but Ablaze people can do it!

    Transformed Mind

    Transformed Mind

If you could, what would you change in your life? Since we live as imperfect people in an imperfect world, we could make a fairly long list. We are powerless to change other people and to change the externals over which we have no control, but there is divine power to change our internal world. Whether it is in our character or our attitudes, there is power to change. God’s goal is to conform us to the image of Jesus.
