Knowledable Podcasters
Knowledable Podcasters
One of my favorite tech podcasts with a few annoyances
These three are genuinely great people with a few blindspots. Which is ok because that covers all of us. They dismissed Roe Jogan as a "bad man" which indicates that they've never listened.
I want to reiterate that these guys are great. I’m with them on 85% of the topics that they cover. I just wish they could learn and grow in a few areas, in the same way that they've embraced growth in others.
Long term trend is not good.
I’ve been listening since day zero, and this used to be my favorite tech podcast, hands down. I expect it will remain in my feed, but I find myself skipping more episodes, and more over the last year especially.
The dynamic of the hosts and the topics they think we’ll find interesting just feels increasingly irrelevant, insular, self-interested and overly in-group.
Topics digress into everything from their food likes/dislikes, to the width of sidewalks in their beach house community, to I don’t know …what feels like hours about the truly mundane process of procuring a basic desktop monitor or charging a car battery.
Then there is this cheeky, well-worn bit about what new Apple products they are buying…and how they can’t stop themselves buying, or did they buy something, and ohhh let’s all guess. Offset by inane discussions about home ceiling fan automation or personal trainers…with a lot of giggling in-between, building into bromance vibes that I’m just not sure belong in the final cut.
It’s sort of ironic, or interesting, that they are slowly doing to their podcast what they so righteously (and rightly) eviscerated Apple for doing with their notebook line during the darkest butterfly kb days. That is, getting high on their own supply, and maybe forgetting the fundamentals?
OK, maybe I’m stretching here, but I’m sure their listenership has continued to climb, and they would probably handwave this critique away. Well. Apple also sold a lot of garage laptops and called them the best ever before eventually correcting course. I would like ATP to correct course. Sort of, bring back the ports.
Not saying they shouldn’t have fun, just 30% less fun and a little more serious preparation on more relevant (less personal) topics would make it a much better show.
Note that none of the above criticism applies to Siracusa. He stays above the fray and still offers thoughtful deep dives that are always interesting. Even when it seems like he is on a tangent, he eventually connects to a broader point that is relatable and useful.
