Addicted or Recovery State of Mind

Addicted or Recovery State of Mind

Last week I talked about how powerful your thoughts are- and that every single thing you do, on a daily basis, starts as a thought in your head. There is no work more important than getting your head together because that is the epicenter for everything else.

Thoughts = Actions, Actions = Reward/Consequence-   That’s the equation and that’s what I want to focus on.

You and I talk a lot about thoughts and behaviors and recognizing that these need to change if you want to change. It makes perfect sense- if you want to BE different you have to DO different.

That means your thought process has to be different and your actions have to be different.

Where many people stumble, is they focus on the behavior and doing things differently, but they don’t actually change their mindset, or perspective on WHY they are doing it differently.

And even though the Double Down on Your Recovery series is coming to an end, I'm going to keep the bonuses coming!

    Relapse Triggers

    Relapse Triggers

Today we’re going to talk about triggers. This is a regular topic of conversation in recovery- we always talk about knowing your triggers and protecting yourself from triggers- but I don’t see the deep dive into triggers- the different kinds and how to recognize them. And this is a game changer.

First let’s break it down into this simple equation:  Triggers produce thoughts, thoughts lead to actions, and actions lead to either a reward or a consequence.

Every single thing you do on a daily basis starts as a thought in your head. This is why I put so much emphasis on mindset and thought process- because it 100% directs you in your life. Everything starts as a thought so it is extremely important that we are in tune with our thoughts and practice training them to support us and be positive instead of mean.

We understand triggers and how powerful they are- but did you know there are different kinds of triggers?

This is super important too because it goes along with learning to protect your sobriety and understanding what situations may be more challenging for you.

We are going to keep this simple and talk about social/environmental triggers ,mental, and emotional triggers.

You walk into a summer party at your sister’s house, hello social trigger! You were stuck in traffic all the way there (mental trigger) and you already feel worn the F out (emotional trigger).

You see how you are already vulnerable as you are walking in the door? No one has said anything to you, no one has offered you a drink, nothing has happened, but there are some triggers stacked up against you already.

And the MOST important part of the whole episode is the SOLUTION. I'll walk you through, step-by-step how to protect your recovery in any situation.

    Having Fun In Sobriety

    Having Fun In Sobriety

We are still going strong in our Double Down on Your Recovery series!  If you are new here that means I am giving you double the episodes and double the support and double the strategies- and I want you to double your recovery efforts!

Today, we are going to talk about finding ways to have fun in sobriety. And I want you to start this episode with a clear and open mind.

I start with that because one thing you have to be aware of as you begin this new way of life is that fun isn’t going to look like it used to.

Fun to me, used to be very drunk, running the streets of Los Angeles, bar to bar and party to party, friends and hangovers and a lot of wasted time.

In sobriety, fun, looks entirely different. When I was drinking I could go anywhere, whether I liked it or not, have drinks, your inhibitions drop, your defenses drop, your anxiety drops- and you lose control of yourself and judgment and actions.

When I was drinking, I thought I was an extrovert. But I was never an extrovert, I was just drunk. One of the mistakes I made in my recovery was that I tried to go out and do extrovert things and I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t enjoying myself.

You have to know yourself and what you enjoy, before you can figure out how to have fun as a sober person!

Many people spend a lot of time and energy stressing out about how they will have fun as a sober person, but this isn't something to stress about. It's normal to have different phases of life and to outgrow things that don't fit us anymore. We outgrow friends, relationships, and hobbies. Getting sober is no different.

It's a new phase as you grow into a better version of yourself. It only makes sense that your activities will change with you.

If you need some pointers or want some ideas, post it in the Facebook group and I'm happy to help. It's totally private, no one can see you are in the group, and there is a ton of support and love.

Recovery Journey

Angela is a must in your recovery journey. I’ve listened to many different recover podcasts but I’ve fallen in love with Angela. She positions this journey in a way that has me excited and I don’t feel like a failure or a loser. I go to bed looking forward to listening to her the next day. Unfortunately like a good alcoholic I binged all her episodes like I binge on everything else so I re listen, take notes and do EXACTLY what she tells me to do. I even have my boyfriend who is a “normy” but does not drink listening to her everyday. Lol. I just love her and I hope you all do too!!! xo Sarah H
