Tom — an ADHD Comedian and NOT a Guru!

Tom Nardone is a member of an adhd group I created, and right off the bat when he joined I knew this guy was a standout. I personally asked him to stick around on the group because he is simply hysterical and brings the same kind of unfiltered Everyman humor to the spotlight that I am attempting to capture as well. He shows the “neurotypical” members of our society (aka the non-adhders) what it feels like to look at the world with the uniquely random and scattered view of a guy coexisting with his adhd-tinted tilt in life. He is a very funny man and his show deserves a listen by those with adhd or for those who want to see what an adhd world looks like. Him and his wife, Yvonne, put on a great show together and lots of laughs are to be had every time. A++ --James R. **Edit and response to the negative comments** those who are criticizing Tom for not making his podcast more about treatment options or on the latest tried-and-true expert take for guaranteed self-improvement, you need to understand that is EXACTLY what Tom never wanted to attempt and certainly didn’t express intentions or promises to do a show in that vein, so to speak. Your options for those kinds of shows are ubiquitous and aplenty, to the level of being somewhat redundant and uninventive and familiar to the point it borders on being forced and contrived. The voices offering such insight on podcasts are so commonplace it’s shocking they aren’t accusing each other of plagiarizing the creator content or the format of each other’s shows because each episode sounds exactly like the next so-called expert’s show. There’s a whole lot of adhd life coaches out for that purpose doing podcasts. Tom doesn’t claim to be an adhd guru or life coach. He’s never claimed to have mastered the conditions in his brain. Nor does he intend or expect to probably ever wrestle his mind into submission (and for that I say thank God!). That’s not his shtick. Not the slant he’s aiming for here in the least. If you are looking for highly vetted psychiatric insight on how to coexist in a better way with adhd, you shouldn’t start here. This podcast is much more about showing the world what it’s like to be an adhd person, with all the inattentive randomness and hyperactive zaniness that the condition is defined by. Many people don’t know a person who has adhd or they’ve never been told that someone they know has it. And they might understandably have some curiosities about how an adhd person might present to the world. That’s what this is all about. Tom isn’t trying to cure an affliction, he’s trying to shine a light on how it looks and also how adhd people can even have brains that are uniquely gifted and entertaining and sometimes adhders are capable of doing certain things in ingenious and creative ways that would perhaps be much harder for the neurotypical mind. He’s not offering life advice and inventive paths to succeed for the adhd mind. He’s celebrating and owning the label and showing how beautiful and intelligent and unique adhd people can be as they compensate for the challenges in their lives by embracing their adhd title and learning to make it work for them. If nothing else, Tom shows the world that he can laugh and bring laughter to others even after the world so long ago tried to tell him he would never find his niche or thrive in his life. He’s a success story and he’s still pivoting and learning how to get the most from his brain as he can. He’s also recently overcome a terrifying fight against brain cancer which nearly took his ability to speak from him altogether and he’s free and clear and in remission fighting to be the Tom he was born to be. Nobody can expect him to give the expert advice he never promised his audience in the first place. He’s instead letting us into his home and personal studio and even his marriage and allowing the world to see his imperfect but beautiful take on the world and the mental gymnastics one must perform to meet the expectations placed upon us. I think he’s met and exceeded in his goal here. It’s about the banter and the laughs and the good nature of his spirit. That’s plenty enough for me.
