#109: Adoptee Reflections with Shelby and Veronica

What if adoptees could tell you about their adoption experience with unedited honesty? Two adoptees came together to create Rooted in Adoption: A Collection of Adoptee Reflections. Shelby Kilgore was born in Korea and adopted by a white couple just before she turned one. Veronica was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, through the closed adoption system. Melissa sat down with them to chat about their stories and how the project came to be. They also chat about the importance of open health records for all adoptees.

#107: Helping Children Understand Their Big Feelings with author, Jessica Sinarski

#107: Helping Children Understand Their Big Feelings with author, Jessica Sinarski

Do you have a child who quickly moves to the fear responses of fight, flight, or freeze? In this episode Lisa interviews Jessica Sinarski, a trauma-informed adoption therapist and the author of Riley the Brave: The Little Cub with Big Feelings. You'll love hearing about how her book helps children and their caregivers recognize these fear responses as courageous ways of coping in hard circumstances.

As Riley, the little cub, embarks on a journey to overcome his fears, he learns that sometimes, being tough or loud isn't the bravest thing to be - sometimes it's asking for help, or being brave enough to let someone into your heart.

This conversation and the book will give you hope for your children and for you too.

Nickey119 ,

Thank you!

There are so many awesome episodes. I’ve been working my way back from #109 as I just started listening but jumped way back to episode #23 when it was referenced in another episode, to hear Lisa’s birth mom story. It really hit home for me as my kiddos are all adopted from foster care and their first moms didn’t choose adoption for their kids. And my kiddos wish their first moms would have made better life choices but these podcast have really opened my eyes to so much!!! Thank you!
