E 346: Tammy's Take #33: 5 Signs Your Nervous System May Still Feel Unsafe

What if you're not actually healed... What if you've simply become really good at surviving? In this episode of Tammy's Takes, trauma-informed coach Tammy Vincent explores one of the most powerful lessons from her recent conversation with bestselling author Janice Erlbaum. Although Janice's story of leaving home at just fifteen years old is extraordinary, the way her nervous system adapted isn't uncommon at all. Many adult children of dysfunctional families learned to become hypervigilant, people-pleasing, perfectionistic, emotionally disconnected, or constantly "on" simply because those behaviors once helped them survive. The problem? Our bodies often continue living by those same rules long after the danger has passed. In this episode, Tammy walks you through five powerful signs your nervous system may still feel unsafe and explains why healing isn't about becoming someone new—it's about teaching your body that it's finally safe to rest. In this episode you'll discover:• Why surviving and healing are not the same thing • Five signs your nervous system may still be living in survival mode • Why you struggle to relax even when life is calm • The surprising reason you read everyone else's emotions but ignore your own • Why so many adult children constantly second-guess themselves • How hypervigilance affects sleep, anxiety, and overall health • Why true healing begins when your body finally believes it's safe If you've ever wondered why you're successful on the outside but still feel exhausted, anxious, disconnected, or stuck on the inside, this episode will help you understand what's really happening beneath the surface. Healing isn't about forgetting your past. It's about helping your nervous system realize that your past is finally over. 🎧 Inspired ByThis episode was inspired by Tammy's conversation with bestselling author Janice Erlbaum, whose remarkable story of surviving childhood abuse and homelessness reminds us that while our stories may be different, our nervous systems often learn the same survival strategies. Be sure to listen to Tammy's full interview with Janice on the Adult Child of Dysfunction Podcast. ❤️ READY TO STOP SURVIVING?If today's episode felt like I was describing your life, maybe that's your sign. You don't have to keep living in survival mode. As a trauma-informed coach, I help adult children of dysfunctional families understand their nervous system, rebuild self-trust, and create lasting emotional healing. E 344: Tammy's Take #32: How To Change the Story Your Mind is Telling You

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't your past... It's the story your past taught you to believe? In this episode of Tammy's Takes, trauma-informed coach Tammy Vincent explores one of the most powerful concepts from her recent conversation with therapist Aaron Gilbert: your default story. Many adult children of dysfunctional families unknowingly carry childhood beliefs into adulthood—beliefs like I'm not enough, I have to earn love, I can't trust anyone, or I'm responsible for everyone else's happiness. These stories often shape our relationships, confidence, and emotional well-being without us even realizing it. Tammy introduces her simple STORY Method, a practical five-step framework designed to help you identify the beliefs you've been living by, challenge old survival patterns, and begin creating a new story rooted in truth instead of trauma. In this episode you'll discover:• What a "default story" really is • Why childhood experiences become lifelong beliefs • How survival mode creates unhealthy thought patterns • Tammy's five-step STORY Method for challenging limiting beliefs • Why curiosity is more powerful than self-criticism • How to begin replacing survival stories with self-trust • The small daily choices that create lasting emotional healing If you've ever felt stuck in the same relationship patterns, battled a harsh inner critic, or wondered why you keep repeating behaviors you logically know aren't serving you, this episode offers hope—and practical steps you can begin using today. Healing isn't about erasing your past. It's about refusing to let your past write the rest of your story. 🎧 Inspired ByThis episode was inspired by Tammy's conversation with licensed therapist Aaron Gilbert, where they explored childhood trauma, healing, self-acceptance, and the concept of our "default story." Be sure to listen to the full interview for an even deeper discussion on healing from dysfunctional family dynamics. ❤️ READY TO REWRITE YOUR STORY?If this episode resonated with you and you're ready to stop living by beliefs that were formed in survival mode, I'd love to help. E 343: Why You Keep Repeating the Same Unhealthy Patterns: Guest: Aaron Gilbert

What if the biggest thing holding you back isn't your past... It's the story your past taught you to believe? In this powerful episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction, Tammy Vincent sits down with licensed therapist Aaron Gilbert, founder of Boston Evening Therapy Associates, to explore one of the most important concepts in healing from childhood trauma: your default story. From the moment we're born, our brains begin making sense of the world around us. For children growing up in dysfunctional homes, those early experiences often become deeply ingrained beliefs about who we are, what we deserve, and how relationships work. Aaron explains why those beliefs can continue running our lives long after childhood—and how we can begin rewriting them. Together, Tammy and Aaron discuss the difference between understanding your trauma and actually healing from it, why insight alone isn't enough to create lasting change, and how self-acceptance, curiosity, and a safe therapeutic relationship can help people finally break free from old patterns. In this episode you'll discover:What your "default story" is and how it developsWhy childhood trauma shapes your beliefs about yourselfThe difference between understanding trauma and healing traumaWhy people continue repeating unhealthy relationship patternsHow to quiet your inner critic with curiosity instead of shameWhy therapy isn't about fixing you—it's about helping you see new possibilitiesThe surprising importance of nature, self-compassion, and small mindset shifts in the healing process Whether you're struggling with anxiety, shame, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or simply feeling stuck in old emotional patterns, this conversation offers practical insights and hope. Your childhood may have written your first chapter. It doesn't have to write the rest of your story. E 342: Tammy's Takes #31: Why Adult Children Struggle to Trust Themselves

Have you ever noticed how quickly you ask everyone else what they think before asking yourself? If you grew up in a dysfunctional home, that isn't because you're indecisive—it's because you learned to survive by paying attention to everyone else's needs before your own. In this week's Tammy's Takes, I expand on one of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with therapist and author Shari Foos: learning to reconnect with your own voice. As children, many of us became experts at reading the room. We learned to recognize moods, anticipate conflict, and make ourselves smaller to stay safe. Over time, we became incredibly skilled at understanding everyone else—but disconnected from ourselves. Healing isn't about learning to make perfect decisions. It's about trusting yourself enough to make a decision, adjusting when you need to, and believing you'll be okay either way. In this episode, I talk about why self-trust is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself, how your nervous system influences your decision-making, and one simple practice you can begin using today to start rebuilding confidence in your own inner voice. If you haven't already, I encourage you to listen to my full conversation with Shari Foos on this week's episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction. Her insights on storytelling, authenticity, and healing beautifully complement today's conversation. Healing doesn't happen all at once—it happens one small, intentional step at a time. E 341: What If Healing Isn't About Fixing Yourself… But Finding Yourself Again? : Guest Shari Foos

n this heartfelt episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction, I sit down with therapist, author, and founder of The Narrative Method, Shari Foos, to explore how writing can become one of the most powerful tools for healing childhood trauma. Many adult children of dysfunctional families learned early in life to stay quiet, suppress their emotions, and become whoever they needed to be just to survive. Over time, many of us lose touch with our authentic voice. Shari believes healing isn't about becoming a better writer—it's about becoming a better listener to yourself. Together we discuss: • Why perfectionism keeps us stuck • The healing power of writing without judgment • How storytelling helps regulate the nervous system • Why being witnessed is often more healing than being "fixed" • The practice of Radical Gratitude • Choosing curiosity over criticism • Learning to trust yourself again after childhood dysfunction • Why healing happens through connection—not isolation One of my favorite moments is when we reflect on a quote from Miles Davis: "It's not the wrong note you play. It's the note you play after." What a beautiful reminder that while we can't always control what happens to us, we can choose how we move forward. If you've struggled with anxiety, people-pleasing, perfectionism, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself, I hope this conversation reminds you that healing isn't about becoming someone new—it's about remembering who you were before life taught you to hide.
