Empowering, insightful and actionable! 🙌

Whether you’re well established as someone who can translate creative energy into the impact you want to have on the world, or just getting started as a catalyst for change - this is a must-listen podcast for you! Mark does an incredible job leading conversations that cover a huge breadth of topics related to the ins and outs of building a thriving career and life you can be proud of as a designer - from leaders who’ve actually walked the path. Highly recommend listening and subscribing!

Up and Down

I first subcribed to this podcast years ago. Listened for a while then unsubcribed because the host kept putting down formal education in design. He was also childish, not in a fun/funny way but in an attention-seeking way.

A couple years later I heard that an artist I admired was a guest on AID so I listened, felt like maybe I should give it another chance, and re-subscribed.

I listened for another year or so but gave up and unsubscribed again. I just can't get past Mark's biases. By his own admission most of the artists he admires are people who drop out of school - and he admires them primarily because they're dropouts and not in spite of that fact. Why? Choosing to enter school and then leave isn't a positive feature. You can like their work in spite of them droping out but to elevate that as the reason for the admiration is concerning.

Mark started one episode by calling a college diploma a piece of paper, a common term used by those who are self-taught. A college degree in Graphic Design means you've made it through a formal cirruculum, learned to take critique from your professors and peers, and have an understanding of the history of the craft. These aren't bad things and to have them repeatedly dismissed just took away any desire for me to listen to another AID episode.

Skip the Long Intros

The guests have a lot to offer, but I didn’t realize going into it that I would have to skip the first 10-20 minutes (!!) of each episode just to get to the interview. Common downfall of a lot of podcasts is the host talking too much to let the guest get in any of their own words. This show definitely struggles with that as well. A real shame, since there aren’t many good design pods.
