Aesthetic treatments won't make THESE patients happier. How to treat patients with body dysmorphia

Aesthetic treatments won't make THESE patients happier. How to treat patients with body dysmorphia

Treating patients with body dysmorphia can be a daunting and complex situation for many clinicians.  Is it ethical to continue treating dysmorphic patients? How do you know if they have body dysmorphia? What if they feel judged or upset if you turn them away?

In this episode I chat to Nurse Emily, a talented aesthetic injector and a past sufferer of body dysmorphia. Not only does Emily open up about her experience of body dysmorphia with me, she explains her process for ethical treatment and management of dysmorphic patients so that you can ensure you are screening your patients correctly and treating them for the right reasons.

We need to educate patients, tell them the truth & manage their expectations

We need to educate patients, tell them the truth & manage their expectations

The best patients, those you can establish enduring trust and relationships with, are the ones who appreciate being informed. They want to know that you've got their back, especially in case of any complications. They value your expertise and see you as a reliable partner in their aesthetic journey.
On the flip side, providing vague information about potential side effects can make you appear unprepared. And if a complication arises, the patient's initial reaction often goes something like, "I wasn't properly informed that this could happen."
I know lots of injectors are anxious telling patients about side effects because it may increase their worry, but in fact, when they’re informed correctly, usually the opposite happens.

That's why I've teamed up with Nurse Chelsea, who's a strong advocate for patient education. Together, we'll dive deeper into this subject, equipping you with the tools to confidently build relationships and discuss potential side effects in a way that's far from intimidating.

The truth about extreme aesthetic Instagram trends. The dangers, risks & 'alienisation' of faces.

The truth about extreme aesthetic Instagram trends. The dangers, risks & 'alienisation' of faces.

Fox, eye, pixie nose, butterfly lips – these trendy treatments have certainly sparked some ethical debates among us medical injectors. But why is that? When Dr. Alex contacted me about this topic, I instantly knew it was podcast-worthy material.

Seeing these potentially risky trends racking up thousands of likes on Instagram and TikTok can leave us feeling uneasy. It's natural to wonder if patients genuinely desire these alterations. Are we missing something here?
Personally, I've always believed in timeless beauty that stands the test of time. But what's driving patients to chase after these procedures? I reckon Instagram trends like these showcase a sense of power, pushing the boundaries of what fillers can do.  As we are aware social media rewards the extreme, but does this translate to real life too?

In this episode, Dr. Alex and I dive deep into the risks of these extreme treatments, dissecting the motivations behind them. We also address a crucial point: why the results you see on Instagram aren't necessarily what you'll get in the long run.

Cultural influences play a major role too. We'll discuss how aesthetic ideals differ across cultures and how these trends can be impacted by cultural norms.

It's a thought-provoking conversation that touches on some controversial and much-needed topics, I know you’re going to love this one.

‘We’re NOT changing people’s faces’ - Why society needs to stop judging those who get aesthetic treatments.

‘We’re NOT changing people’s faces’ - Why society needs to stop judging those who get aesthetic treatments.

This topic has long been overdue for discussion, and when Nurse KB entered my podcast competition, both my team and I were aware that his chosen topic would be a compelling one. In this episode, I have a conversation with Nurse KB about the prevailing stereotypes surrounding aesthetic treatments. Despite the increasing intensity of the push towards body positivity and inclusivity in 2023, why do patients still experience concerns about being judged for opting for injectables?
Rather than desiring a completely transformed appearance, many patients simply wish to regain their own familiar look. During our discussion, we explore the importance of effectively communicating this message to patients and society at large. We emphasize that opting for injectables does not mean adopting the infamous "duck lips" or a frozen botox face. When performed correctly, it can lead to renewed self-confidence and subtle adjustments that help patients feel more like themselves again.
If your patients express worry about being judged by their peers for getting aesthetic treatments, if they’re worried about ending up with ‘duck lips’ or feel getting injectables will make them ‘vain’ then this episode will help you to understand how to educate your patients on why and how we can achieve subtle, unnoticeable results.
