    12. Colonics Are Cancelled! Gut Health Demystified ft. Desiree Nielsen

    12. Colonics Are Cancelled! Gut Health Demystified ft. Desiree Nielsen

RD Desiree Nielsen joins me to sort the chaff from the wheat, literally. We discuss all things gut health, and delineate the science from the fearmongering, buzzwordy marketing around gut health and microbiomes. She explains how the health industry has taken isolated nutrition truths about gut health and extrapolated, exaggerated and mis-contextualized them to push products and restrictive diets that claim to ‘transform’ your gut. We tackle myths about our microbiomes and discuss the demonization of seed oils. We debunk the efficacy of colonics as well as “probiotics for weight loss” (I’m looking at you Better Body Company!), and shed light on what information is and isn’t fact checked in the nutrition world.

    11. Optavia Diet Review

    11. Optavia Diet Review

Today’s solo episode is a review of the Optavia diet (formerly Medifast), a 30-year-old diet that, surprisingly, has stood the test of time. I unpack everything from the dangerously low calorie intake and the peddling of diets to teenagers, to the devastating correlation between restrictive food practices, ignoring the body’s internal cues and disordered eating.

    10. Thinness At Any Cost ft. June Burke-MacDonald

    10. Thinness At Any Cost ft. June Burke-MacDonald

The pursuit of thinness at any cost has to stop. In this day and age most of us can see right through irresponsible comments like “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”, but how many of us can identify diet culture disguised as health? Do you know the line between health promoting behaviors and obsessive patterns? How do you get yourself out of food habits that began with good intentions but have now spiraled into compulsion? In today’s episode I’m joined by clinical social worker June Burke-MacDonald, a social worker who specializes in eating disorder recovery, to unpack all things disordered eating, both socially and clinically. We discuss the causes of eating disorders, how to navigate nutrition without dogma, misconceptions about eating disorders, and the insidious nature of calorie tracking. You don’t want to miss this one: if not you, then a friend, or a friend of a friend has been touched by the effects of diet culture and eating disorders disguised as health.

    9. Diet MLMs aren't your friend ft. Brittany Morgon

When someone promises you health through a supplement that is branded, expensive and part of a pyramid scheme, you should know to run. Diet MLMs (multilevel marketing schemes) aren’t new, but the pushback they’re receiving is, thanks to the likes of Brittany Morgon. A nutrition and fitness coach by day, and a bad-ass MLM slayer by night, Brittany has her boot firmly planted on diet MLMs’ necks. She joins me today to explain how and why these pyramid schemes have such a tight grip on the community’s they prey on, specifically women, mom’s, military families and the chronically ill. She exposes their fearmongering tactics and use of pseudoscience and outlines the financial ruin many of their members succumb to. She also details the dangers of Optavia and the social cost of leaving these MLMs.

    8. Challenging Nutrition Pseudoscience is a Full Time Job ft. Andy Miller

    8. Challenging Nutrition Pseudoscience is a Full Time Job ft. Andy Miller

RD Andy Miller joins me to discuss the changing landscape of dietetics as it pumps up against social media and its slew of misinformation. We discuss the backlash we face when speaking out against bad actors, and the incalculable damage the likes of Bobby Parrish, Mark Hyman and Jason Fung have on the public’s understanding of health and nutrition. We unpack the insidious trend of wellness advocates putting their children on diets under the guise of “healthy eating” and “portion control education”, and how scientists misappropriate animal studies to launch unfounded attacks on accessible foods.

    7. Why I Want You To Eat Processed Foods

    7. Why I Want You To Eat Processed Foods

You heard me. I want you to eat processed foods! Not necessarily more than other foods, nor as an overrepresentation of your diet, but in the ways you find convenient, balanced, joyful and practical. Because the truth is that most foods are processed, including nutrient dense foods like canned beans, vegetables, tofu and unsweetened yoghurt. In this solo episode I break down the Nova classification system that is responsible for classing foods as “processed” and “ultra-processed”. I explain its limitations and how the classifications are problematic. I illustrate why the foods under these classifications aren’t inherently unhealthy and why they should not be demonized. I outline how many nova-classified foods are actually health promoting, and that ultimately, our diets are greatly impacted by social determinants of health. Ultimately, your diet should support the life that you want for yourself, and joy, culture, convenience and celebration through food is a large part of that.

Refreshing

It makes me so happy to hear a dietitian talk about loving food, eating and the body you’re in. As a person who has yo-yo dieted my whole life having in ingrained weekly that no foods are bad and slashing calories isn’t “healthy” I appreciate Abby and her guests’ views. I’m also a farmer and work in agriculture, so supporting all types of food and not fearing food is a huge hit button for me. I especially appreciate the call out of organic being a management practice rather than a nutritional value. Keep up the great work!

My new favorite nutrition podcast

I’ve followed Abby for a long time on IG and have always appreciated her knowledge and no-nonsense approach to sharing information and calling out bullsh*t. I was excited to hear she launched a podcast and have loved every episode. Must-listen for anyone wanting credible nutrition guidance.

Healing

As someone who has fallen prey to the nutrition “snake oil salesmen” out there, this podcast has been very informative and healing for me. I love all your content and thank you for taking a stand against these pseudo nutrition experts and even your peers at times. Health is not a one size fits all.
