Alicia McCarthy: Healthy Home: A Deep Dive into Safer Cleaning and Disinfection Practices Green Living with Tee

    • Alternative Health

This week Tee is delighted to welcome Alicia McCarthy for a deep dive into safer cleaning and disinfection practices in our home. A growing number of studies have identified cleaners as a group at risk for adverse health effects on the skin and the respiratory tract. Chemical substances present in cleaning products could be responsible for these effects. Alicia is here to guide listeners through the science of better and safer cleaning while also offering tips on what to look for in safe cleaning products.
Alicia is a committed and enthusiastic scientist and educator at the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI), TURI staff are engineers, scientists, policy experts, and planners whose focus is promoting the adoption of safer solutions for Massachusetts company's uses of toxic chemicals. She is actively engaged in guiding businesses and communities towards the identification and adoption of safer chemicals for cleaning and disinfection applications. Alicia has been the Laboratory Specialist at TURI for over six years, she leads projects focusing on the performance testing of chemical products and devices. Her work is primarily centered on promoting and implementing safer, more sustainable cleaning and disinfection practices that aim to minimize the health and environmental impacts of toxic chemicals. She holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Environmental Health and two Master of Science (MS) degrees, one in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene and the other in Molecular Cellular Biotechnology.
In this episode, Alicia shares her journey into the field of environmental health and discusses her work on identifying and promoting non-toxic cleaning and disinfection practices. The conversation delves into the harmful effects of certain chemicals used in cleaning products and introduces safer alternatives and eco-friendly practices, including DIY cleaners, and the importance of understanding labels and ingredients. In addition, Tee and Alicia emphasize the need for education on the distinction between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting and the potential health and environmental impacts of overusing harsh chemicals.
