    (Re-Post) Walter Hooper Tribute – Episode 1

    IN THIS REPEAT: Here's the first of two shows featuring a variety of people reflecting on the passing of Walter Hooper.

    This is the first of several podcasts to honor the legacy of Walter Hooper who died on December 7, 2020. His funeral is scheduled for January 8th at the Oxford Oratory at 11 am local time. Most are aware he served as the Literary Executor of the C.S. Lewis Estate for many years. As you will hear in this episode, Walter was THE key person in making sure several books published by Lewis before his death stayed in print, as well as collecting and releasing new material that many enjoy today. In this episode, you will hear from a handful of people who knew Walter reflecting on some of their interactions with him (see the list below). The next episode (scheduled to release on January 8th) featuring others who knew him can be heard on the Pints with Jack podcast.

    (Re-Post) Essay Chat #21 - Learning in War-Time (Alan Snyder)

    IN THIS REPEAT: Here's the most recent essay chat..."Learning in War-Time" with Dr. Alan Snyder

    "Learning in War-Time" is an essay by C.S. Lewis that has application beyond its original context. This is why it was selected for my occasional podcast series focusing on a single shorter work by him. Dr. K. Alan Snyder joined William O'Flaherty to discuss this insightful essay. Dr. Snyder is a historian and has written a variety of books in that realm, in addition to the 2016 title, America Discovers C. S. Lewis. "Learning in War-Time" was actually the first sermon by Lewis and was given before he was well-known. Today it is best found in the collection The Weight of Glory. As with other "essay chats," the purpose of focusing on a single essay is to encourage you to read (or re-read) it and other essays by Lewis that are often neglected.

    Tolkien's Modern Reading (Holly Ordway)

    Tolkien's Modern Reading (Holly Ordway)

    C.S. Lewis had many friends...the most famous was J.R.R. Tolkien, whom he worked with for many years at Oxford University. Just as with Lewis, there are many misconceptions about Tolkien. One is that he "read very little modern fiction, and took no serious notice of it." Dr. Holly Ordway has studied the issue for many years and discovered Tolkien was much more aware of modern culture and the inspiration for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings was not only medieval. She joined William O'Flaherty for a podcast interview to share her insightful findings. Dr. Lisa Coutras also joined the show to help with co-hosting.

    (Re-Post) CSL - Life, Works and Legacy pt. 2 (Dr. Bruce Edwards)

    IN THIS REPEAT: The second of a two-part interview with the late Dr. Bruce Edwards about a four-volume set he edited.
    This is the second of a two-part interview that William O’Flaherty had with Dr. Bruce Edwards about C.S. Lewis: Life, Works, and Legacy, a four-volume set of books that came out in 2007. It a title many are unaware of because its main target is libraries. However, there are frequently used copies available from Amazon that are reasonably priced (see link below). In this final chat about this invaluable work, Dr. Edwards focuses on the last two volumes. The third deals with Lewis as “Apologist, Philosopher, and Theologian” and the final book explores  Lewis as “Scholar, Teacher, and Public Intellectual.”

    (Re-Post) CSL - Life, Works and Legacy pt. 1 (Dr. Bruce Edwards)

    IN THIS REPEAT: One of the last interviews with the late Dr. Bruce Edwards...the first of a two-part show on a four-volume set.
    Back in 2007 a four-volume set entitled C.S. Lewis: Life, Works, and Legacy was released. Dr. Bruce Edwards edited this ambitious effort. William O’Flaherty caught up with him recently to discuss this reference work that is often overlooked because it is priced for libraries and not the general public. In this podcast Dr. Edwards provides some insight into how this 1,400 page effort came to be, along with giving some highlights of what you will find in volumes one and two. The first book focus on “An Examined Life” and the second details with Lewis as “Fantasist, Mythmaker, and Poet.”

    (Re-Post) Becoming C. S. Lewis (Dr. Hal Poe)

    IN THIS REPEAT - Dr. Hal Poe shares about his bio on the early life of C.S. Lewis in Becoming C.S. Lewis.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    How well do you know C.S. Lewis? You probably don't know Jack as well as you think, until you know his early life. Or more accurately, nearly all of Lewis' interests and tastes were formed in his first twenty years. That is the new book by Dr. Harry Lee (Hal) Poe, entitled Becoming C.S. Lewis examines these early years and shows how his youth influenced his later life and writings. This podcast interview features Dr. Poe explaining how he came to write this book (the first of three) and why knowing Jack Lewis (his friends called him "Jack") is best understood by exploring his formative years.
Lewis and More
If you are addicted to Lewis as I am this is both informative and a “guilty indulgence” of listening to talk from various perspectives about Lewis and all his works. I found episode 565 particularly interesting and it is typical in that it offers not only a thoughtful discussion of Lewis, but also his fellow Inklings such as Tolkien, Williams, and others whom most of us have delved into to some extent. If you love Lewis, this is a podcast for you that is also easy to fit in to your listening schedule as it rarely exceeds 1/2 hour in length.
What do they teach them in these schools?!
As my love for C.S. Lewis has grown, I have gone looking for C.S. Lewis podcasts. All About Jack is probably my favourite, offering interviews with noted authors and scholars on a wide range of topics related to C.S. Lewis. Despite growing up in a Christian home in England, my knowledge of Lewis was pretty much restricted to the Chronicles of Narinia. This podcast has been an education!
