Ep72: How Structural Racism & Implicit Bias Create Disparities in Maternal Care for Black Families

Ep72: How Structural Racism & Implicit Bias Create Disparities in Maternal Care for Black Families

This episode is a bit different than what I usually talk about on the podcast, but I hope that you will tune in and learn something new about maternal healthcare and racism in our country.
In this episode I'm talking about the disparities we see in maternal healthcare & outcomes for Black mamas and their babies. I describe some of the structural racism we see in the medical field, what implicit bias is, and how these forces add up to create a difficult environment for Black people - including mamas - all over the country.
I also share some of my personal experiences with racism in my career, a few stories from friends and colleagues, and a couple instances where I witnessed the medical system mistreating Black women. I hope that this episode educates and inspires you to think about what you can do to help dismantle racism in our country, whether that's talking to your friends and family, committing to raising anti-racist kids, or helping reform your profession so it becomes truly equal for everyone.

Ep71: Rachel's Birth Story - Giving Birth in New York During COVID-19

Ep71: Rachel's Birth Story - Giving Birth in New York During COVID-19

Before we start in on this story about giving birth during COVID-19, I want to acknowledge the huge protests going on in America and abroad at the time of this recording. These protests, begun after George Floyd was murdered by a police officer, are happening in response to the racism that is embedded into our societies and institutions. I have always worked to lift up and serve all mamas, but promise to continue my commitment to helping Black mamas in particular navigate America's racist medical system.
In this birth story episode, Rachel shares her experience giving birth in New York at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. We talk about why her childbirth education was particularly helpful as she navigated labor & delivery; what it was like giving birth to a big baby at the hospital during COVID-19; and why it is so important to remain flexible during your birth.

Ep70: Labor Induction: What to Know and What Questions to Ask

Ep70: Labor Induction: What to Know and What Questions to Ask

Today I'm talking about the two main reasons for labor induction, how labor is induced, what a "failed induction" is, and questions to ask before induction. I have gotten a ton of requests to talk about this topic, and I believe it is incredibly important for you to be informed about the process of labor induction whether you are having a medical or elective induction.

Thank you!!

I found your Podcast because I was interested in learning about getting pregnant at 40 something and childbirth etc. I like your podcast thus far. I listened to the episode with Dr. Cindy Duke and it got me a little scared because I couldn’t afford to freeze my eggs and I want to have children. I am trying to get my spouse on board since I am in my 40s but it is challenging. Any advice to help me stay positive and not increase my anxiety about getting older.

Excellent Resource

Dr. Calloway Rankins’ podcast and other online resources have been a wonderful guide as we prepare for the birth of our first baby. She is knowledgeable, kind, and has the most soothing voice on top of it all! She explains and clearly emphasizes important takeaways in each episode that underscore the discussions, helping to firm the information in my mind. So grateful to have discovered the podcast!

Just as informative as it is calming!

Dr. Rankins has such a soothing presence! I love hearing her share information and helping parents (as well as birth pros like myself) stay up to date on the best practices for labor and birth. As a doula, I especially appreciate her OBGYN perspective and that she is fully supportive of birth options. Thank you!
