Open Mic Airs on Alzheimer's Speaks
Today we talked with Steven A. Barbieri and Truthful Loving Kindness, both living with dementia. It was a very interesting show with great insights. We covered a variety of topics listed below.
* The diagnostic process and the difficulty in getting an actual type of dementia pinned down.
Like Cancer, Dementia is a category, not an official disease like Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body Dementia, Vascular, FTD, CTE…
We also dive into the benefits of exercise.
The importance of the Phrases – Nothing About Us Without Us and Nothing About Me Without Me
Organizations that tout having a “Token” person living with dementia on the board… and the impact of that.
Truthful’s Blog on dementia symptoms and strategies.
Using a cell phone for strategies, pictures to help remember things or events, calendars, and reminder alerts.
Quality of Life for people living with dementia. *Bidets, what a wonderful tool as the disease progresses.

Educational Panel – Videos Raising Voices of Those Living with Dementia Dementia Chats™ was created in 2012, to educate people living with dementia, and their care partners including family, friends, professionals, and advocates. Dementia Chats™ positions our panelists to be the true experts. They are those diagnosed with some form of dementia.
Our panelists vary from program to program, depending on their schedules. New voices are always welcome to join us. Lori La Bey, the founder of Alzheimer’s Speaks facilitates Dementia Chats. She learned how essential it was to listen to those diagnosed. Her mother lived for 30 years with dementia. Lori found that people living with dementia had great insights and creative ideas for care, and felt their voices needed to be lifted. Those diagnosed show us how to be inclusive in new ways.
Our Panelists become spokespersons for themselves and others living with dementia positioning them as advocates, and many say it gives them a new sense of purpose and pride which allows them to continue to live a dignified and purpose-filled life. Learn

Adaptive Publications Providing Social, Cultural, and Spiritual Engagement
Adaptive Publications Providing Social, Cultural, and Spiritual Engagement
Lori La Bey talks with a variety of founders who are providing a variety of adaptive reading publications. This is a fabulous show that can be life-enriching for not just those living with dementia but for all older eyes! I think you will be amazed at all the resources we discussed and why they were developed.
Laurette Klier is a career educator-turned-passionate advocate for adaptive publications for elders in life review. Her series, NANA’S BOOKS uses nostalgic art and literature in considerate formats to facilitate meaningful communication and unite generations.
Nikki Jardin Publisher and Co-Founder of Mirador Magazine - an award-winning, adaptive text publication.
Luke Gilligan is the founder and CEO of Resense, a company that creates innovative and restorative products for individuals living with Dementia. Luke has a passion for care and creating unique, dementia-friendly products and experiences for individuals living with Dementia.
Eric Kolb is the Executive Director of Songs & Smiles. The nonprofit uses dementia-friendly singalongs and magazines to keep families connected during the Alzheimer's journey.
Ann Aubitz is the Co-owner and Publisher of Kirk House Publishers and FuzionPress. She is proud to present the Reminisce Line of reader-friendly books that is filling a huge gap for those living with dementia as well as our elders who are avid readers and are finding typical offerings either too difficult or too easy to read.
Lessons Learned:
How each person saw firsthand the need for adaptive reading publications in different ways
How enabling people to continue to read had a major effect on health and wellness.
Why a coalition of Adaptive Publications is critical to getting the word out these tools are available.
How are these products different and why?
Examples of how these "social prescriptions" are meeting a huge need in the reading industry.
Hear examples of how dignity, respect, and engagement are maintained.

Solid podcast about a under talked about topic
Very powerful podcast that helps people understand a challenging topic. Great work Lori and thank you Alive & Social Network for offering this show.

Too long!
I am already exhausted caring for person with brain disease so please shorten your podcasts into digestible bites with a clear title so I can more accurately search for what is a current need to address: taking person for eye exams when they can’t self report how clearly they can see; drooling, sloppy eating but won’t let you help them. Please more practical advice.
Disappointing
I was very interested in the episode about the difference between elder housing
