#47 Ann Arbor Stories: The Billboard Bandits

The shrill, biting staccato whine of a chain saw pierces the cold, night air. Thud. Another billboard falls to the ground along a highway in southern Michigan.
An estimated 167 billboards in all—cut, chopped, and chainsawed, along highways throughout Michigan, mostly in the vicinity of Ann Arbor. The papers called this group The Billboard Bandits. But they weren't the only ones terrorizing good old fashioned marketers in town.

#45 Ann Arbor Stories: Highway Snipers

There wasn't a lot of traffic on M-14 on that last day of August 1981. It was 3am. Semi trucks bound for points in Michigan and throughout the Midwest, cars carrying people headed to work, cars taking people home after long nights. It was at this time on this day on this stretch of highway that more than 200 bullets rained down on speeding cars, trucks and semis, causing mass panic and chaos. This is the story of the 1981 highway snipers.

A Just Brilliant Concept!

After listening to all the episodes, I feel like I really know Ann Arbor now - most of them were highly entertaining and I have to admit that this was a great way to learn some American history.

Now I wish that more of our great cities would follow in Ann Arbor’s footsteps and get a talented group of their historians together and put out podcasts of their own. If you need convincing, consider this: a year ago Ann Arbor was just a name to me - now I actually want to GO there and visit for a vacation.

Very Promising New Podcast

There's only 4 episodes so far, but this has all the makings for a terrific collection. The narrator is every bit as good as Aaron Menke (of Lore), and the stories are short and interesting.

In fact, if this goes on as it's begun, it could very well be "Ann Arbor Lore" (if they can find some really bizarre stories from the city's history that've been well-buried and thought lost forever.)

Hoping for the best!👏
