"We’re all products of pop culture. Hard to escape it. Film and books, though, are as different as apples and giraffes…”
—Dennis Lehane

On Apples to Giraffes, we look at the art of adaptation: the transmutation of novels into films, films into comics, video games into TV shows, and anything else we decide we want to discuss! Each episode we’ll discuss a piece narrative art, successes and failures in previous adaptations, and what we think we might do with it if we were in charge.

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell

Season Finale! Never has David Mitchell's literary vision been more clearly on display than in his 2014 novel "The Bone Clocks," a series of interlocked tales that span the lifetime of Holly Sykes, from her introduction as a rebellious teen in 1980s England to a conclusion taking place in a chilling vision of the near future. But "The Bone Clocks" is also a wild tale of supernatural forces at work in our world AND a tour-de-force showcase of the author's virtuosity, working in a range of genres and styles... Not to mention the fact that this novel serves as the lynchpin connecting Mitchell's various works from "Cloud Atlas" to "Black Swan Green"! Can this "elevated genre" novel be adapted to the screen? Listen in to find out! PLUS: A sneak peek at "Apples to Giraffes" Season Two and our list of "Five Graphic Novels Just Begging to be Brought to Life on the Screen"!

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

🧛🏻 It's the time of year for macabre Hallowe'en decorations, rewatching "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," and of course... The undead! On this spooky episode, cohosts Jonas and François give Grady Hendrix's 2020 novel "The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires" the Apples to Giraffes book club treatment, discussing how this modern horror tale, that invites an undead bloodsucker to a suburban 1990s neighborhood, might be brought to the screen. What challenges would a filmmaker face with this often funny, often gory horror novel? We also talk about our personal Hallowe'en traditions and we wrap up the episode with some seasonally-appropriate plugs, including the source material for a much-beloved Studio Ghibli movie. 🐈‍⬛

    Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

    Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

This week we're talking about "Piranesi" the new novel from Susanna Clarke, her first since the mega-hit "Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell" came out over 16 years ago. If you haven't read this puzzle-box fantasy yet, fear not, we are trying out a new format where we cordon off spoilers in their own section, so feel free to tune in to see if you'll dig Clarke's latest... But it's no spoiler to say that both Jonas and François adored this book! We discuss the complexities of adapting an epistolary text, and debate if this novel is calling out to be brought to the screen or would be better left off on the page! Plus: A genuine SCOOP in our New & Notable segment... Tune in to hear a bit of movie news you won't get anywhere else!

A unique perspective

There are a million podcasts about the creative process, but none with a point of view quite like this one. By dissecting the adaptation process, Francois & Jonas, as creatives themselves, unpack narrative success and failures. Stories can always be improved or ruined with a few alterations. Their conversations are warm, inviting, and always entertaining. Check out their latest episode on Charles Burns’ Black Hole to hear what I mean. And just go ahead and click that subscribe button today. You will not regret it.
