    Stop Doing Invisible Labor Without Being Called Needy or Greedy

    Invisible labor is everywhere—at work, at home, and especially in high-achieving environments. It’s the extra effort no one assigns but everyone expects. The problem? The moment you stop doing it, the narrative shifts. Suddenly you’re “difficult,” “needy,” or “not a team player.” If you’ve ever felt trapped in a cycle of overgiving, this conversation will help you step out of it—strategically. – The psychological and social backlash when you stop overgiving – How behavioral patterns reinforce these expectations – Practical ways to set boundaries without damaging your reputation   There is a difference between feeling wanted and being valued. Your own behavioral patterns, often an attempt to seem easy to get along with or agreeable set you up to reinforce extra expectations for work that goes unrewarded. Illuminate the invisible: List everything you do behind the scenes that keeps things running smoothly. Share the time it takes and the way it positively impacts outcomes. Focus on delegating the whole task, including the invisible parts of it so others appreciate the true effort involved. Set boundaries - you are not responsible for dragging others across the finish line or for compliance with warped definitions of leadership or psychological safety. Wanting credit for what you do is not presumptuous.     Weaponized Incompetence: The Silent Career Assasin

    You stayed late again. You fixed the thing no one else could figure out. You stepped in because it was “just easier if you handled it.” At work, this dynamic has a predictable outcome: The most capable person becomes the default problem solver, emotional buffer, and extra pair of hands. In this episode, you'll learn how to spot weaponized incompetence in your team and yourself and how to overcome it. Common causes: Fear of failure- you assume that you’re supposed to know how to do something and instead of asking for help try to avoid being asked to do it at all (a growth mindset problem) Perfectionism – You think you have to have hit certain achievement milestones to be ready. You keep putting your success in the future Fear of success – if you take this on and do well at it will it lead to more assignments like this- you don’t want to get pigeonholed for doing a task you don’t love or suddenly find yourself overwhelmed with work or seen as the person who can be dumped on last minute (a boundary problem) Procrastination – this is the “lazy” or inertia trap. You hide behind being too busy to avoid having to take any real career risk Passive Aggressive acting out- you disagree with the assignment and don’t want to do it, but don’t want to take a stand either. The Fix Catch when someone or yourself is using some version of “I don’t know how” to avoid doing something. If they say I don’t know but I’m willing to learn, that’s one thing, but if they have no interest in moving towards competence, that’s the red flag. Have a conversation about what specifically the person doesn’t know how to do or feel comfortable doing.  Discuss a plan for them to get the training or resources they need.     Your workday is filled with mundane tasks that drain your time and energy. Plus, doing less than top of license work is hardly a great financial strategy. But is AI really the solution? My guest Peter Swimm of Toilville gives you the lowdown on why open AI is just a time suck rife with hallucinations. Listen in to learn how a bespoke conversational AI system will solve your unique problems better and  relieve your cognitive burden in the process. If your AI platform isn't aligned with your process it's not going to produce much that's reliable or of value. Since AI is predictive based on the process it is designed for, anything that deviates will lead to hallucinations. That's why creative firms whose processes are more complex and have more variables need a customized model. Don't abdicate your responsibilities to AI, use it as a tool to accomplish repetitive, low skill tasks based on the process you define.  More software never makes people more productive, simplify instead of over-complicating. The questions you ask determine the solutions available to you. Effective problem solving and design requires a true understanding of the client's pain points. These "desire lines" can be overlooked when solutions are generated too quickly and an error was made in the early stages of the process.     From Attendee to Thought Leader: Leveraging Conferences and Social Media

    Attending a conference is not a passive learning experience. In this episode, I walk you through the pre-work needed to show up string and build your subject matter expertise street cred using social media.  Look at attendee list especially speakers who are subject matter experts in something you want to develop- connect with them on social media Come up with one good question to ask for each session you plan to attend Make sure to follow the conference and event organization on social media and note any conference hashtags.  Decide on your own set of SME hashtags. If you see a speaker or the event positing anything about content you flagged as of interest, leave a comment saying why you can’t wait to attend! Make sure you attend networking events Take a photo of the speaker or a slide they present and post a thoughtful insight about it.
