Weird fiction with a crispy coating of black humor and chunks of creamy science

This podcast explores malevolent architecture, audible body horror, magic, and tape recorders, among other things. I binged on the 3 (currently available) seasons in a week or two.

Each season is different, and expands the world in interesting directions. You need to listen to them all for the full experience, but if you have trouble with the shifts, try the next season; you can come back later, once you see how great the next destination is.

I love weird fiction, and don't mind use of familiar tropes, done well, but this is an original story and world without plots that you've encountered before. Themes and ideas from SF support an atmosphere of cosmic horror, while including some excellent black humor, and enough pure weirdness to delight. The characters are good and their struggles moving.

The 3 seasons are fairly separate stories, with links in the form of a common world and history, as well as encounters and gradually-revealed relationships between seasons.

You don't really have any choice — listen and enjoy.

The stars keep disappearing every time I press the fifth one so I hope this sticks. Beautiful podcast. I keep replaying it because I can’t seem to mesh the exact story together, which I don’t know is an intended effect or not but that’s okay since it only enhances the feeling the podcast leaves. Can also hit you in the emotions without warning, I was so upset about the last episode in the first season that I didn’t pick up the podcast again for a while. I won’t do that again. 6/5 stars that hopefully don’t vanish.

Ending up loving it

I listened to season 1 of Archive 81 in 2016 and really enjoyed it. But then season 2 hit and the dramatic thematic change really threw me off so I stopped.
Recently delving back into narrative horror podcasts I decided to give it another listen.

Going on with the knowledge that the tone would shift between seasons, was a very different experience. I binged it all and can confidently say I enjoyed the hell out of it.

It is well produced with excellent sound design. During some of the body horror scenes, a bit too good... Post season one: if you are squeamish about body horror tread lightly (I got caught washing dishes/elbow deep in water during a particularly gory scene).
